It is with many mixed feelings that Tom and I announce that we are closing Pelican Path B & B by the Sea. We will take no new reservations after Sunday, May10, 2015.

We always knew there would come a day when we would face this action; however, this year of 2015 has presented us with the events which put the decision to close the bed and breakfast into play..

Tom and I have both enjoyed a couple of historic birthdays which make us wonder how much longer we can continue such an
active, non-stop lifestyle.

We have loved the bed and breakfast business. Tom has always said, "The best people in the world come here...and they pay to do it."

We have been exceedingly busy here at Pelican Path since the first of March when we reopened. The harsh winter in the North has sent many of its citizens scrambling for the face of the sun and the feel of warmer weather. Even our weather has continued to be changeable with some dreary days; however, our visitors have still embraced the beach which, always welcomes them to come for a nice, long walk on its shores and offers its reward of newly deposited shells to those who enjoy and are delighted by them.

Even though the beach is still beautiful and many are enjoying it, a change of season is happening...young folks are getting ready to return to another year of school. Lots of energy is being directed toward that activity. Pelican Path will be open through August, but closed for the month of September because if we are going to have a hurricane, that typically, will be when it arrives. We will re-open for the month of October when the beach is at its loveliest. The weather will cool off a bit and fewer people will be on the beach. Nice month to visit Pelican Path!

05/27/2014

May has been a very busy month here at Pelican Path. Lots of people have enjoyed our beautiful beach location. We are fast approaching June 1 when we will need to close for one month, re-opening 0n July 1. Our Duval County Property Appraiser mandates that Homesteaded Bed and Breakfasts can only be open for 6 months of the year. Pelican Path's open months are: March, April, May, July, August, and October. We will be taking a couple of fun trips in June...to China and later in the month we will take two of our grandchildren to Yellowstone National Park. Being a grandparent is truly a joyous privilege.

We do still have a couple of rooms available for the 4th of July week. This is a great spot to view the 4th of July fireworks. If you might be interested, contact us prior to June 2, when we will be leaving for China.

We look forward to seeing you in July!

Even though the weather is still vacillating between warmer and cooler spring weather, the Beach is definitely beginning to showcase its Springtime activities. The last weekend in April (4/26 and 4/27), the official Sandcastle contest and the Beaches Parade will take place. Then, as we move into May, The Players Championship (TPC) at the Players Stadium Course at Sawgrass is scheduled for the week of May 5-May 11. This is an annual event boasting the largest purse on the PGA Tour. This is always an exciting event played in a beautiful setting with a large attendance anticipated. Jacksonville Beach has also scheduled two of its free movies on May 9 and May 16, family affairs at the Sea Walk Pavilion. Memorial Day weekend, that fabulous 3-day weekend which is perfect for a beach getaway, follows on Friday, May 23-26, helping to close out an active, busy month at the Jacksonville Beaches.

March has been sometimes spring-like, sometimes more like a return to winter. Today, however, promises to be another lovely day with a high forecast to be 72 degrees. All we need is a couple of these lovely days in a row and the phone starts ringing and the parking lot at the oceanfront fills up. Yesterday, children were swimming in the ocean - they must have been visitors, for us "year-rounders" require a bit more warmth in the water before immersing our bodies in it. The surfers, of course, are in the water year-round. We definitely know Spring is in the air... Springing the Blues the annual, free music festival is scheduled for the first weekend in April...April 4-6th. Time to begin planning your trip to the ocean to enjoy nature's beauty and the fun activities that accompany it.

Despite the fact that Punxsutawney Phil, the "national" groundhog, saw his shadow and thereby predicted 6 more weeks of winter, we here in Florida have enjoyed several days of much warmer, nicer weather. Our local equivalent, Pinnelope, an African four-toed hedgehog, exhibited "clear eyes, low body fat and high levels of activity on February 2, all signs that Spring is on the way," writes the Florida Times Union. "Pinnelope has never, ever been wrong at forecasting the weather," claims Tony Vecchio, executive director of the Jacksonville Zoo." So, if you in the Northeast, Midwest, and West persist in your winter weather you might consider a Florida Weather Break. Pinnelope had spoken! And Pelican Path B & B by the Sea re-opens on March 1.

January is typically a real winter month here in Jacksonville Beach, and it has certainly proved to be one this year with "polar vortexes" continuing to head our way. However, here the truly cold weather lasts only a few days before the temperature heads back up into the 70's and even nearing 80 degrees. So in the midst of our "winter" we will see people sunning themselves on the beach and the surfers, of course, who never quit the ocean.

11/20/2013

Effective November 1st, Pelican Path closed for four months as required by our local Property Appraiser. Although we would certainly prefer to remain open, we are unwilling to have to switch from a "homesteaded" building (we live here) to a commercial designation. Although we are unable to book rooms during this 4-month period, we can certainly furnish information and take reservations for dates beginning in March 2014. So, check us out and contact us if we can be of help with information or reservations.

Here we are in mid-October, one of our "open" months, and also one of my favorites. Here at Jacksonville Beach we have already enjoyed somewhat cooler weather and both sunny and rainy days. It is mostly a great month on the beach. Today, the clouds disappeared and the sun came out and the beach is beautiful! This may be a fading opportunity to enjoy the beach at its best...until we emerge on the other side of our winter weather in early March. Give us a call.

09/18/2013

September, one of our six "closed" months, has been a quiet month here at the beach. Thankfully, thus far hurricane season has also been quiet. We have been taking reservations for October and even into 2014. When we are closed, we are still available to talk with those who have questions or wish to make reservations. These closed months, while a real disruption to business, provide some time to tend to some maintenance projects. Tom is busily working to put together our phone and doorbell systems which were knocked out in August by a lightning strike. I have been replanting some of the yard that chinch bugs devoured. By October 1, we should be restored and ready to greet you as you arrive to enjoy a truly beautiful month at the beach!
