{Milford’s October Wedding}

This couple visited me in the spring and loved the vibe at the schoolhouse so much, they wanted to spend the week leading up to their special day under our roof. They came and went, took the decorating slowly and intentionally, spent time with family, had a bridesmaid slumber party, and ended the week with the most beautiful + intimate wedding.

Together we brainstormed ways to pivot an outdoor ceremony after three weeks of rain + mud everywhere, and honestly, this setup for a smaller wedding was absolutely perfect.

My favorite part was sneaking down the stairs one day this week and overheard the groom telling a couple friends about the stained glass piece. He was so proud of his bride and her creativity as she handmade this original and legitimate stained glass window as a focal point of their special day.

As we rush to hang skeletons and fill holiday inspo boards, I wanted to take a minute for a quick September Schoolhouse recap…here’s how we spent the month!

🌽 We hosted a group from out of state for the Iowa Farm Progress show, all second floor suites booked for close to a week!

🎫 We welcomed a giveaway winner for their overnight in the Story Suite.

💍 Milford’s September wedding was a reception for our best friends to celebrate with Iowa friends + family.

🎉 Our suites and ballroom hosted a wedding party for an extended weekend + getting ready photos and the ballroom hosted their rehearsal dinner!

🍽️ Our own family converged on the schoolhouse for gatherings, dinners, and we welcomed some family from out-of-state for a few days.

🎃 Hosted our biggest market to date, and easily the largest event of our time at the schoolhouse for the Central Iowa Vintage Road Trip

🌲 The Christmas collecting and planning is underway + we are so excited for what this upcoming month + cozy season has in store.

It may not look like it, but just ONE of these bottles of root b**r touches not one, not two, but FOUR small businesses with each purchase.

First, we discovered a love for cutie root b**r thanks to our Galena friend Paul Pendola at Root B**r Revelry …for years we’ve been stopping to let the kids pick a dye-free souvenir and catch up on life between visits. A couple months ago he suggested doing a schoolhouse root b**r, letting us tag in with a bulk order of his ‘Driftless’ blend and we thought, what a fun idea for the merch corner!

From there, we learned all of this specialty root b**r is brewed and bottled at Millstream Brewing Co. in the Amana Colonies! So, a couple weeks ago we made the trek to pick up 300 label-less bottles of our soon-to-be schoolhouse root b**r. Not only did we get to pick-up our order, but the owner gave us a special tour of the basement, storage rooms, explained their whole operation AND let these boys have a taste-shot of root b**r straight from the still!

We got these bottles back home and it was time to deal with the labeling part, and, as you know, ‘Graphic Designer’ is one of the schoolhouse titles I carry. So. Thanks to Canva + Deb at Nite Owl Printing in Ames, we had sticker labels just in time for the Central Iowa Vintage Road Trip !

And there you have it…the little story behind our very own Milford Schoolhouse root b**r, hand labeled with love + sold at our monthly markets!

The profit margins aren’t anything to write home about, all four of these businesses would tell you, but when you zoom out and see the bigger picture, it’s all kind of amazing. I love Amazon and Target as much as the next person, but I PROMISE YOU, shopping small, local, and Iowa-made CAN BE DONE!
