My old Classmate Jimmy Heatherly found this old golf ball on a course in Dallas Texas. I'm guessing this ball was from the 50’s or 60’s.

The Bank of New Bern was located on Po***ck Street in the building that is now the home of Beer Army. Perhaps John B. Green III could tell us when this bank was founded.

I think I remember in the 80's or early 90's the Bank of New Bern was bought out by Nations Bank and later Bank of America.

The link below describes the first bank in N.C. also called the Bank of NewBern, not the same bank as the one we are talking about, and gives a list of some of the more prominent board members.

Good news for North Carolinians. I serve on the NC House Transportation Committee. Friday, the Fiscal Research Division of the General Assembly sent the Transportation Committee members an email with the latest forecast on DOT revenue for this fiscal year. It is their opinion that revenue for DOT will be up about $450 million over the projected revenue forecast that they did in May of 2020.

How could they be off that much? Well, there are several reasons, but the biggest reason is that when the forecast was made we were in the middle of the pandemic and frankly no one knew where the economy was going. So they opted to budget revenue conservatively.

What does this mean? It's likely too late to plan and spend the extra revenue in this fiscal year which ends June 30. However, it should allow some additional projects next fiscal year which begins July 1.

As I learn the inner workings of State government, you will learn, provided you want to. I intend to share as much information as I am can as it becomes available to me . I hope you will share this page with your friends and help me communicate with all the citizens in Eastern NC. Thanks for allowing me to serve you.

Covid vaccine update.

I was on a conference call today with Dr. Mandy Cohen, Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. My take away from this phone call is as follows:

N.C. has been receiving 120,000 doses a week. I did the math and if you take the amount of first doses already administered and subtract that from our total population, and divide that number by 120,000, we are looking at 1.4 years to administer the first dose to all of our population. Of course this doesn't account for the population who do not want to take the vaccine, so it should not take 1.4 years, and I would hope the weekly doses will increase and decrease the time frame. Also a third vaccine (Johnson and Johnson) will hopefully be out in a few months and will speed up the process.

The allocation process going forward will be as follows:

84,000 of the 120,000 doses we are receiving will remain going to local providers, based on the population of the counties. 36,000 of the 120,000 doses will go to the priorities as follows:

1. Additional allocation to counties that receive less vaccine than others over the past week as we shifted to maximize speed.

2. Increase access for historically marginalized populations, with a focus on achieving racial and ethnic equitable access to vaccine.

3. On board new providers to expand access.

Bottom line. This virus is going to be with us for a long time.

CarolinaEast Medical Center (hospital) is going to be receiving around 950 Covid-19 vaccine doses today. More will be coming in as the drug companies start to ramp up their production. CarolinaEast have freezers that can keep the vaccine a comfortable -80 degrees F. The vaccine will be given out to health care providers and seniors before going out to the general public.

Below is a photo of the new hospital just before it was opened in 1963. Ride by now and compare the difference. The change is quite amazing.

See the building to the left of the hospital? Now, that is a story that needs to be told, and I will-- after Christmas.

And former Army Officer Bob Brinson will be sharing information on election news. Hope you can tune in.

How many of you remember this? My dad use to load us up on occasion and take us on this ferry. It was a big deal for a little kid.

This is an incredible photo of Streets Ferry while it was still. The ferry crossed the Neuse River until the bridge was finished, you can see the bridge under construction in the background. I can't remember when the bridge, I call it the Weyerhaeuser Bridge, was built but think it was early 60's.

I think this was from the Benners Collection.

This is a cool photo of the old Trent River drawbridge. It is dated 1918. I assume this is the one that you went down George Street to cross. During this time the bridge tender and his family actually lived on the bridge in a small house. (Post below says Needham L Gaskins was the tender. That’s his son in the photo)

Keep in mind that the waterways were the best way to transport many agricultural products to market. Flat bottom steamers could go quite far up the Trent River to haul crops to their destination. It is my understanding that Po***cksville had a small port that was used for loading crops onto the barges. I think it was on the left heading up river before the existing bridge in Po***cksville. Perhaps some of my Jones County friends can give us some insight on this matter.

So, even though the bridge was located West of the busy commercial district waterway, the tender was probably pretty busy during the crop harvest season. What a life for the kids, must have been pretty cool, especially if you liked to fish and swim.

Ken Edwards sent me this photo several years before he passed away. I am not sure where it got the photo.

Please send me your any questions you have about the new round of PPP or Covid-19 related questions.

Please send me your any questions you have about the new round of PPP or Covid-19 related questions.

If you have questions you want to ask Congressman Dr. Greg Murphy tomorrow morning 8:00 am send me a text (252 514 9157) or PM me. The show will be live on Suddenlink C-TV-10 and on Facebook. As a physician Congressman Murphy understands the Covid-19 Virus better than most. Dr. Murphy is also a business owner.

He will also be discussing the next round of the Cares Act PPP in some detail and when we might expect to be able to start receiving our loan/grant. With 22 million job losses in the last month it is critical this funding happen soon, and is disbursed in a fair and equitable manner. Time is not our friend.

Also, State Representative Dr. Perrin Jones will be calling in at 8:25. This is a good time to get your questions answered. Please send them to me.
