Covid vaccine update.
I was on a conference call today with Dr. Mandy Cohen, Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. My take away from this phone call is as follows:
N.C. has been receiving 120,000 doses a week. I did the math and if you take the amount of first doses already administered and subtract that from our total population, and divide that number by 120,000, we are looking at 1.4 years to administer the first dose to all of our population. Of course this doesn't account for the population who do not want to take the vaccine, so it should not take 1.4 years, and I would hope the weekly doses will increase and decrease the time frame. Also a third vaccine (Johnson and Johnson) will hopefully be out in a few months and will speed up the process.
The allocation process going forward will be as follows:
84,000 of the 120,000 doses we are receiving will remain going to local providers, based on the population of the counties. 36,000 of the 120,000 doses will go to the priorities as follows:
1. Additional allocation to counties that receive less vaccine than others over the past week as we shifted to maximize speed.
2. Increase access for historically marginalized populations, with a focus on achieving racial and ethnic equitable access to vaccine.
3. On board new providers to expand access.
Bottom line. This virus is going to be with us for a long time.
