Another cool thing to see in Maine!

One of the more unique sights in Maine, the “Million Dollar Birdhouse Wall” is a roadside attraction you’ll find along Route 201 just north of Moscow, Maine. What could have been an ordinary wooden retaining wall has turned into a long, colorful display filled with handmade birdhouses, stretching along a busy section of road near the Kennebec River and Wyman Lake.

The wall is said to get its name from the million-dollar-plus cost of building the retaining wall itself, but today it’s the birdhouses that make people slow down and take notice. Since around 2011, travelers and locals have kept adding to it, turning it into a kind of outdoor guestbook made of wood, paint, metal, and imagination. Some birdhouses look like tiny cabins, little ships, and miniature hotels, while others are made from old license plates, coffee cans, hard hats, teapots, and other unexpected materials.

Many are bright and playful, some are signed by the people who built them, and others have faded naturally from Maine weather. It sits about seven miles north of Moscow on the northbound side of US 201, where the shoulder is narrow, so it’s best admired carefully. It’s quirky, creative, and perfectly Maine.

The lupine are just starting to show themselves down here on the Pemaquid Peninsula. It does seem to get earlier and earlier. If you want to catch them come stay with us before the end of June.
