Ever wonder about the significance of the Mardi Gras colors? They were officially established by the New Orleans Krewe of Rex in 1872. A popular explanation says the colors were chosen to honor visiting Russian Grand Duke Alexis Romanoff, whose royal house included purple, green, and gold. But historians still debate the exact origin of the palette. The symbolic meanings were formally assigned later, in 1892, during a Rex parade themed “Symbolism of Colors.”
