St. Augustine, Florida is the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the contiguous United States. Known as the “Nation’s Oldest City,” it was founded on September 8, 1565, by Spanish admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. He named it San Agustín because his fleet first sighted the Florida coast 11 days prior on the feast day of Saint Augustine of Hippo.

Key Historical ErasSpanish Rule & Military Defense (1565–1763): Founded to secure Spanish territory against the French. To withstand frequent attacks from British forces and pirates, Spain built the Castillo de San Marcos in 1672. It remains the oldest masonry fort in the United States.Sanctuary for the Enslaved (1738): Spain offered freedom to enslaved people escaping British colonies if they converted to Catholicism and pledged military loyalty. This led to the creation of Fort Mose, the first legally sanctioned free Black settlement in the United States.Shifting Empires (1763–1821): Control of the city bounced from Great Britain back to Spain, before Spain ultimately ceded Florida to the United States via the Adams-Onís Treaty in 1821.The Flagler Tourism Boom (Late 1800s): Gilded Age tycoon Henry Flagler built luxury hotels and railroads, transforming the city into a premier winter resort for wealthy Americans.Civil Rights Milestone (1964): Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led historic nonviolent protests here.
