Textiles of Motherhood: Carriers of Love Across Cultures ✨

This May, as we celebrate Mother’s Day, we close our three-part series on handcraft traditions with an edition from our longtime newsletter collaborator , as she explores the timeless handwoven carriers that have cradled babies across continents and generations. Written with extra tenderness as Nicole prepares to welcome her own little one in June, this piece is a heartfelt celebration of motherhood in all its woven beauty. 💕

From the versatile bilum of Papua New Guinea and the protective cradleboards of Native American traditions, to the vibrant Mayan perraje of Guatemala and beyond — each textile tells a story of quiet strength, deep love, and cultural wisdom passed through mothers’ hands.

SS26 Embroidery Details and Stories

While standard silk yarns hold a tight twist for strength, we custom-created untwisted flat silk just for this collection. Free from constraints, these filaments have natural fluff, captivating sheen, and an ultra-rich, velvety handfeel that melts under the needle.
The result is embroidery that feels alive—soft, voluminous, and exquisitely dimensional.
The magic unfolds. The collection is now available at Bode!

Softening the Line: From Cord to Textile

In this month’s newsletter, we explore the evolution of basketry to macrame and the softening of knotted cords to soft, fine textiles

As macramé evolved, so too did its materials. Moving beyond the rigid fibers of traditional basketry, the craft embraced softer, more pliable threads such as cotton, silk, and linen. This shift enabled macramé to transition into more delicate, textile expressions, with drape and movement. By the 18th and 19th centuries, macramé began appearing in fashion and decorative accessories, including intricately knotted handbags, fringed shawls, and scarves.

I still remember the moment we decided to tell the real story behind this jacket.

For Fall 2023, we created these beautiful starched silk checks in two gorgeous colorways… and then we sketched the entire living ecosystem around it.

Look closely at the background: you’ll see artisans weaving and working together yet separately — some under open skies, others from the comfort of their homes — all pouring their hearts into one shared dream.
That beautiful coming together is what makes craftsmanship so magical to me. ✨
It reminds us that the traditional wisdom of making, passed down through every culture, is humankind’s greatest wealth.
This idea lives deeply in Earth Democracy, inspired by the ancient Indian saying Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — “the world is one family.”
As one Earth family, we all have equal rights to the gifts of our planet. When economy, environment, and people stay in balance… that’s when true sustainability blooms. 🌍❤️
