Schools are out for the next few months, but the family machine does not stop moving. Parents need to go to work and kids need to stay busy and engaged. Some of us have school-aged children who are old enough and responsible enough to stay at home during the day; this does not mean they are equipped to handle every emergency that may come up while home alone.
I created a brief document that takes away a lot of the guess work in a stressful situation. It is a single page and printed on orange card stock paper attached to the one thing (The Fridge) they will make contact with the most aside from their phones. The goal here is to get emergency responders enroute as quickly as possible.
This is merely a suggestion if you find value in it. If you decide to use this or a variation of this that better meets your needs, make sure the kids are educated on it. Drill with them. Talk to them about what to do should there be a fire. If they are old enough, make sure they know where the fire extinguishers are and that they know how to use them. For me, I tell the kids to just, "Grab the Dog and GET OUT!" You are not trained to battle fire, and everything can be replaced except for YOU.
Let's all work together to ensure we have a safe, happy, and productive summer vacation!
