Port Commissioners toured the former Rogue facilities this week, getting their first look at the vast space that will return to Port control once bankruptcy administrators give the go-ahead. While the main brewery facilities are mostly empty, the distillery still houses a significant number of full whiskey barrels. Now owned by Ninkasi Brewing Company, the barrels are expected to be moved very soon, leaving the distillery building empty. Next steps include a feasibility study to provide Port officials with guidance on the potential future uses for this important location.

Port Commissioners joined Executive Director Paula Miranda in celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Staff Accountant Mark Harris at last night’s commission meeting. “It has been a great honor to have Mark as one of our accountants here. He is such a joy to work with,” Miranda shared. “He stays late when needed, works very hard, and everybody loves working with him,” she added.

Harris was working at a private firm that was auditing the Port when he first came into contact with the organization. “I was really impressed with the people,” he recalled, saying they were ultimately the reason he joined the staff a decade ago. In his remarks, Harris described his career at the Port as “always an adventure and never a dull moment.”

Thank you, Mark, for 10 years of dedicated service!

Safety is critically important in commercial fishing. The partnership of organizations and individuals highlighted in this post deserve a huge THANK YOU for all they have done to promote safety training, provide safety equipment, and generally aid our fishing community.

Commercial fishing remains one of the most dangerous jobs in the United States, but along the Oregon Coast, researchers, fishermen and coastal communities are working together to improve safety at sea. ⚓️

Amanda Gladics, an Oregon Sea Grant Extension fisheries specialist and associate professor of practice in Oregon State University’s Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences, has helped lead a collaborative initiative focused on commercial fishing safety, emergency preparedness and community support.

Between 2024 and 2026, the initiative reached eight ports and supported hundreds of fishermen through:

🦺 727 life jackets distributed
🚤 141 fishermen trained in first aid and emergency drills
🛟 206 immersion suits tested and 127 replaced
🎣 146 commercial fishing licenses provided to fishermen facing financial barriers

This work highlights the power of long-term partnerships between researchers, fishing families and coastal communities working together to save lives at sea.
