This long Maine winter has had me reflecting. While things may have seemed quiet at Duck Puddle Campground, a lot has been happening behind the scenes.

Duck Puddle has always been about family, and shaped by generations who return year after year. Some of our campers today are the grandchildren of those who once camped here. After my dad passed away, that intergenerational connection became even more meaningful to me.

If you were lucky enough to sit around the campfire with my dad, you know the stories were sometimes unbelievable, not always appropriate, but always funny. They had a way of making everyone laugh together—and somehow, that laughter brought everyone closer. Those same stories are now being retold to his grandchildren, keeping that connection alive.

That kind of oral storytelling—sharing memories, humor, and lived experience across generations—feels like something we’ve slowly lost in today’s busy world.

That’s why I’m excited to share two new local organizations rooted in bringing it back: Mainely Memory Foundation and MerryGen Inc. Their work aligns so naturally with what Duck Puddle has always stood for: time together, shared stories, and connection grounded in nature. And as we look ahead to another camping season, I’m grateful for the generations who came before us and hopeful for what’s growing from these deep roots.

Tonight, as the last light of the year fades and the moon rises to greet a new beginning, we pause to reflect on what truly matters…friendships that feel like family, laughter shared under the stars, and the peace that nature brings. In 2026, we look forward to more campfire conversations, more adventures, and more moments that remind us why we gather here.
