In 1925 her brothers moved the family boot factory to Fort Worth. She was thirty one years old, and she refused to go, so she started a competing boot company in the town they were leaving. 👢

Enid Justin had been in that factory since she was twelve, stitching tops after school. Her father H.J. Justin had started making boots for drovers coming up the trail at Spanish Fort and later moved the operation to Nocona when the railroad came through. When he died in 1918 the business passed to the family, and within a few years her brothers decided Nocona was too small and too far off the main line to build anything on. They were not wrong about the economics.

She went to work with a handful of the people who had stayed behind, in a town that had just watched its largest employer load up and leave. The Nocona Boot Company made its first boots that year. She was on the floor, she was on the road selling, she knew every step of the process because she had done every step of it, and she built the thing back up piece by piece across the next fifty years. People in that part of North Texas knew her simply as Miss Enid.

She ran the company until 1981, when Nocona and Justin finally merged back together, which meant the boot company she founded out of a family split came home to the family on her terms rather than theirs. She was one of the first women inducted into the Texas Business Hall of Fame. She had outlasted the Depression, the war, the arrival of cheap imports and pretty much everybody who told her in 1925 that a woman could not run a boot factory in a town of three thousand people. 🤠

ART & AN INCREDIBLE STORY AT RED RIVER STATION INN

During Art of the Song Weekend, October 9–11, Red River Station Inn will be featuring the beautiful artwork of Stacie Dohlman of Peaceful Paintings & Creations and the story behind her work makes it even more special. ❤️

In 2019, Stacie’s life changed when she suddenly began losing her vision. Colors disappeared, reading became difficult, and after multiple appointments without answers, an MRI finally revealed a lesion on her brain. She was diagnosed with neuromyelitis optica (NMO), a rare condition that can affect the optic nerves and spinal cord.

Through timely treatment, incredible doctors, the support of family and friends, and what Stacie describes as God placing the right people in her path at exactly the right time, her vision was restored.

For someone who had always loved everything visual; the colors of a sunset, photography, decorating and creating…being able to see again was a gift she would never take for granted.

Stacie picked up her art supplies and began painting. 🎨 She started with watercolors, took lessons from different artists and eventually discovered a painting style that especially resonated with her. Her work became a celebration of color, creativity, faith and the gift of sight.

Today, each piece she creates holds a little part of that journey.

As Stacie says, “I hope you enjoy each piece that has brought me a little peace each time.”

We hope you’ll make Red River Station Inn one of your stops during Art of the Song Weekend and experience Stacie’s artwork in person. Behind every brushstroke is a story of faith, gratitude, perseverance and seeing the beauty in life in an entirely new way. ❤️
