Set the hat down on the rail this morning.

Coffee in hand. Dogs close by. Fog sitting low over the Elk River.

Funny how one little thing can take you back.

Back to Leiper’s Fork.
Back to music coming through old walls.
Back to tables full of people who didn’t all arrive together.
Back to porches, stories, guitars, family, food, and strangers who don’t stay strangers long.

The kind of place where a local goes out of their way to ask somebody passing through:

“Hey, what’s your name?”

That’s the part that stays with you.

Not the polish.
Not the hype.
The welcome.

Sitting here in Noel, looking at this river, it’s hard not to think this town has its own version of that waiting to be heard.

Not a copy of anywhere else.
Not a slogan.
Just a feeling.

A place where people gather.
A place where music finds the water.
A place where families come back.
A place where the story gets passed across a table.

A memory.
A nod.
A hope for what this river town can become.

The Ozarks have their own.
