For animal lovers in Florida, visiting the Myakka Elephant Ranch is about as heartwarming as it can get! You can even help feed and bathe elephants here and take part in an elephant “manicure,” where mineral oil is brushed onto their toenails to help keep them from drying out and cracking. Located near Myakka City, the ranch is a nonprofit conservation center where visitors can spend time close to both African and Asian elephants while learning what goes into caring for these huge animals. Different experiences offer everything from learning about elephant behavior to preparing breakfast, handing out treats, scrubbing an elephant during bath time, and helping with regular care. The Care Workshop even includes checking weights and learning how an elephant uses its trunk to grab things. Professional caregivers are there throughout each experience, sharing stories and explaining why elephant conservation matters. The ranch also puts part of its effort back into the community, setting aside 10% of its encounters for outreach and offering qualifying nonprofit and educational groups complimentary visits. Visits are by reservation only, making this a Florida experience worth planning ahead for.
