Memory #10
There were no modern facilities when Long Lake began and it continued that way until the late 70’s. There were large outhouses built at what is now the west side of the campground. A six seat for the ladies outhouse and the same for the men’s. Two single outhouses were located on the east end of the picnic area for the cabins and two single ones north of the beach. They were whitewashed buildings on the outside and painted on the inside. Oh how times have changed!

Memory #9
🍿The concession stand for the baseball area was east of the modern bathhouses in the small area of trees where campers now reside. The concession stand was not in use once the baseball games ended but the abandoned building was there until the 60’s and for a few, it became a hideout for those cowboys and cowgirls riding stick horses. With one of the popular songs of the early 60’s being “The Sugar Shack”, it seemed appropriate to name the abandoned concession stand, now turned hideout, “The Sugar Shack”!

Memory #7
Bill and Thelma and their daughter (Eileen) who was 4 years old when the lake first opened, lived in Laketon in the off season but they had to be at Long Lake when it was open, so they made living quarters in the back of the restaurant (now The Landing).

Memory #6
In the 1920’s and 1930’s Indiana had a fishing season. Bill would open the restaurant (which is now The Landing) the night before the fishing season came in and would stoke a wood burning stove that was in the middle of the room and he would stay up all night with the fishermen, telling fish stories and waiting for the clock to reach the hour everyone could get out on the lake and start fishing.

🛢Homemade root beer was always on tap in the restaurant. The wooden root beer barrel is on display in The Landing.

🍿Bill buys a copper kettle and builds a small concession stand to sell caramel corn. People would continue to come in the 60’s and reminisce about the great caramel corn he made. The copper kettle is on display in The Landing.
