A MEMORY IS A TREASURE

A memory is a special treasure
Which endures and gives us pleasure
One we cherish always, for we know–
Recalling certain times and places,
Tender moments, smiling faces,
Always brings our hearts a warming glow,
Though time may pass, a memory stays,
Reminding us of happy days,
And of the people who have touched our lives–
Of favors done, and love expressed,
Of those who’ve stood above the rest,
A memory is a treasure that survives.

One hundred years of Long Lake memories have been a part of so many lives.
Our family finds it a privilege to have been able to be a part of it all! And we’re looking forward to all the new memories that are on the horizon!

Memory #100
The Fall Festival was added to Long Lake’s events in 2019. This event takes place on weekends in The Fall during parts of September and October. It is open to the general public and provides families with fun fall activities and memories that will last a lifetime. For those who came to the lake when it was open for daily swimming, it gives them a chance to reminisce and relive some fond memories while also being able to make new ones! This fall will mark its 8th year. There are boat rides and hay rides, lots of games, face painting and concessions and so much more. The Landing has lots of items for those who want to take home something to remember their day.

Memory #99
The Landing, as it is known today, has evolved throughout the years. The building is the original that Bill built to house a restaurant and living quarters in the back. In the early 50’s it was converted into a rental cabin. It was known as “The Big Cabin” as it was much more spacious than the other three cabins at the east end of the picnic area. When cabin rentals were discontinued, the building was sided and the windows boarded up and it was used for storage. When it was decided that the lake should become a private campground the building was taken back to much of its original beginnings. One lady that had come to the lake with her Dad as a child liked to come into The Landing and point out the stool that she would sit on to order a hamburger back in the 30’s. She claimed that stool as her own!

Memory #98
The diving boards came down in 2007 and in 2008 inflatables were added. There were several different inflatables. The Saturn, The Iceberg, The trampoline, The Water Totter and a smaller inflatable for the shallow area. The Iceberg tested your strength to get to the top and The Saturn tested your strength to see how long you could hold on while others tried to knock you off. On one extremely stormy day, straight line winds picked the Iceberg up out of the water and all of the anchors broke off of it while flying through the air. It flew over the trees and the county road and landed in a pool in someone’s back yard! After that experience and a few other times the inflatables were pushed to the east end of the lake during other days of inclement weather, it was decided they weren’t the best option for the lake. In 2020 the large pier was taken out and in 2021 the diving boards were put back in. The landscape of Long Lake was restored to its original look!

Memory #97
Diving boards were always a part of Long Lake from 1926 to 2007. When the lake changed to a private campground, it was decided that the diving boards should come down. During the summer of 2007 the boards came down, the platform was taken apart and the posts that held the platform were taken out of the lake. The standards that held the diving boards were placed on the playground and used for climbing. A large pier was built that extended into the lake in about the same location as the platform had been. Chairs were placed on the pier for people to sit and watch the swimmers or take in some sunshine. The landscape of Long Lake had changed.
