Memory #33
A basketball court was built in the 50’s. Originally the cement was painted red, the pole was painted silver along with the backboard. The basketball court is still there. The red paint has worn off and decorative lines and a free throw line have been added. The chain net has been replaced with a rope one and the pole and backboard are no longer silver. When Long Lake was open for daily swimming, a basketball game was part of the daily landscape. Teenage boys would come from all over the area, divide off into teams and game on! Then when they were tired of playing and hit the water to cool off, the younger kids could try their skills out on the court. Along with basketball games, there were many games of “Horse” or “Knock Out”. Some women, who had come to the lake often as teenagers, came back one day, years later, and reminisced how they would come to the concession stand, from the beach, while a basketball game was going on just so they could watch the cute guys on the court and hope they would be noticed! Feel free to share your basketball memories!

Memory #32
A lot of factories and companies in the surrounding area made Long Lake their company picnic destination. Most of the factories or companies would rotate from year to year between Long Lake and other venues. One factory started coming to the lake for their company picnic in the 50’s and has continued the tradition until present. The Ford Meter Box Company still holds their picnic at Long Lake on the first Saturday of August. Harry and Eileen would tell how in the early days of the Ford picnic, the Ford Brothers would charter buses for their employees and families to attend the picnic. A side note….since they have been scheduling their picnics on the first Saturday in August, they have never been rained out. If you want to plan an outdoor activity, that might prove to be a good day!:)

Memory #31
Many families have gathered throughout the years for family reunions at Long Lake. Some families would book their reunion (to reserve the pavilion in the picnic area) a year in advance and would come year after year. Some families came so many years, that signs were professionally painted with family names to hang on the pavilion on the day it was reserved for them.

Memory #28
Bill and his family lived in the back of the restaurant until the late 30’s. He decided their life was at the lake and they would build a house and move from Laketon. In 1938 the house, which is still there, was built and Bill and Thelma and Eileen moved in. Eileen would only live in the house with her parents for a short time. She graduated from Laketon High School in 1939 and married Harry Swygart in 1940.
