Trolley Tour in North Manchester - oh the fun and amazing buildings in town

Historic Preservation Month continues, and we’re excited to spotlight another group of incredible North Manchester properties that have been recognized through Manchester Alive’s Historic Preservation Awards program. These homes and buildings remind us that preservation is not just about maintaining structures — it’s about honoring the craftsmanship, stories, and character that make our community unique.

🏡 602 N Mill Street – House of Seven Gables
Recipient of the 2021 Residential Preservation Award, this beautifully restored Eastlake-style Victorian home features the angular and three-dimensional details popular during the late Victorian Era. Its decorative iron fence only adds to the home’s striking presence and historic charm.

⛪ 308 N Walnut Street – Walnut Street Church
Honored in 2023 following restoration of the roof and bell tower, this historic church was originally built in 1885. The original 135-year-old slate roof was replaced with a sustainable slate-like “green roofing” material while preserving the historic appearance of the building.

🏠 908 N Wayne Street
Built in 1954 by Danish couple Niels and Ingleborg Bendsen, this one-story frame home received a preservation honor in 2019 after Dan and Jeanne Andersen completed extensive interior and exterior restoration work while maintaining the home’s original footprint and Danish-inspired style.

🏡 407 N Walnut Street
Emily and Stephen Donaldson were recognized in 2024 for their preservation of this charming 1883 Italianate home. The mansard roof, original windows, and preserved footprint continue to make this property a standout piece of North Manchester history.

Want to see these properties — and many more — in person? Join us Thursday, May 28 aboard Trolley No.85 during our first Thursdays @ The Landing event of 2026!

🚌 Historic trolley tours will depart from Ogan’s Landing at 6 PM and 7 PM and will feature local historic homes, buildings, and preservation stories from around the community.

🎶 While you’re there, enjoy live music, food, and a beautiful evening along the river.

🎟️ Tickets are $3 in advance at Manchester Alive or $5 the day of the event.

May is Historic Preservation Month, and all month long, Manchester Alive's Historic Preservation & Design Committee will be celebrating the people and places that have helped preserve the character and history of our community.

Through the years, so many homeowners, business owners, and preservation advocates have invested their time, resources, and passion into maintaining the historic structures that make North Manchester unique. Throughout May, we’ll be sharing past Historic Preservation Award winners and the stories behind these special properties.

This week’s featured properties include:

1.🏡 408 E. 7th Street – The home of Mary Lou Brown received a Residential Award in 2016 for the preservation of this charming frame house, originally built in 1910. The home was previously restored and lived in by Steve Batzka prior to Mary Lou’s ownership.

2.☕ 101 E. 2nd Street – Honored in 2018 while home to Kenapocomocha Coffee Shop, now Travel Bee Coffee House, this historic corner property at Market and 2nd was originally built in 1888 by Dr. Lower, a local physician. The site also included the small brick office next door (former chamber of commerce).

3.🏠 202 W. 3rd Street – James Wehner was recognized in 2015 for the preservation of this beautiful 1863 Pennsylvania-style farmhouse, the only brick home of this architectural style in North Manchester.

4.🏰 The Castle House – Restored by Steve Batzka, this striking Queen Anne home was originally built in 1885 and later modified with the addition of its iconic tower around 1900.

Historic preservation is about more than saving old buildings — it is about honoring the stories, craftsmanship, and community identity that continue to shape North Manchester today. We are grateful to those who continue to invest in preserving our local history for future generations.

Watch this month for more bits of history, and don’t forget — you can see these historic homes and hear their stories on May 28 aboard Trolley No.85! Find tour tickets at https://manchesteralive.org/EventCalendar
