❄Winter Weather Alert: Prepare Now ❄
The City of North Myrtle Beach is actively monitoring weather conditions as the area remains under a Winter Storm Warning and Extreme Cold Watch this weekend. Forecasts indicate the potential for snow accumulation across much of South Carolina, and City Officials are urging residents to prepare now and remain at home as conditions deteriorate.
While ice is not currently in the forecast for North Myrtle Beach, extremely cold temperatures could cause snow and moisture on roadways to refreeze, creating hazardous driving conditions. In preparation, Public Works crews have begun pre-treating City bridges and access points to City facilities and will continue operations throughout the weekend as conditions allow.
Residents are encouraged to take the following steps to protect themselves, their families, neighbors, and pets.
PREPARE NOW 🧳
• Ensure your heating system is in proper working order.
• Use only safe and reliable heating sources inside your home.
• Seal drafts around windows and doors to help retain heat.
• Never bring generators indoors or operate them near windows or doors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
• Monitor local forecasts and road conditions.
• Avoid unnecessary travel. If you do not need to be on the road, stay home — home is the safest route.
• Keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle, including blankets, water, snacks, and a flashlight.
• If using a wood-burning fireplace, ensure you have a working carbon monoxide detector.
• When using portable generators during power outages, position them safely away from structures to prevent exhaust fumes from entering your home.
• Remember: bridges freeze first. Slow down and avoid them if possible.
• Check on vulnerable neighbors and loved ones. Ensure they have adequate food, heating, medications, and supplies.
KEEP YOUR WATER ON🚰
Due to extreme cold temperatures, frozen pipes are a concern this weekend. Residents are urged to take preventive steps now to avoid loss of water service.
The City will not be turning off water service during the winter weather event and will wait until conditions improve before restoring service to individual homes affected by frozen or burst pipes.
Prevent Frozen Pipes:
• Insulate exposed pipes.
• Allow faucets to drip during periods of extreme cold.
• Drain and disconnect outdoor hoses and piping when possible.
STAY OFF THE ROADS 🛣
Public Works and Public Safety officials strongly urge residents to stay home as weather conditions worsen. Home is the safest route.
• Roads may become slick quickly due to snow and refreezing moisture, even if conditions appear manageable.
• Use caution and remain alert for South Carolina Department of Transportation vehicles, City plow trucks, and City brine trucks actively treating roadways.
• Reduced visibility and rapidly changing conditions can make travel dangerous.
