There is a house on Prince Street in Georgetown, South Carolina, where one of the most important Americans you've probably never heard of was born — and where he died 55 years later, in 1887.

His name was Joseph Hayne Rainey. He was born into slavery in that house in 1832. His father bought the family's freedom by saving the earnings from a barbershop, coin by coin, over years. Joseph became a barber too. He was forced to work for the Confederacy during the Civil War. He escaped to Bermuda with his wife. He came home to Georgetown in 1867, walked into Reconstruction politics, and on December 12, 1870 — became the first Black man ever elected to the United States House of Representatives.

He served five terms. He argued for the rights of Black Americans, Native Americans, and Chinese immigrants from the House floor. He sat in the Speaker's chair on April 29, 1874, as the first Black man ever to preside over a session of Congress.

In America's 250th year, his story deserves to be told at full volume.

The beaches of the Grand Strand were front-row seats to one of the Civil War's most overlooked coastal campaigns. Union gunboats shelled Murrells Inlet repeatedly. A 25-man Navy crew captured a Confederate fort near Little River in the dead of night. A Union admiral accepted Georgetown's surrender — and declared slavery ended in Georgetown County — before his flagship was sunk by a mine in Winyah Bay the very next morning.

The smokestack of that ship, the USS Harvest Moon, still breaks the surface at low tide today.
