SEVERE DUNE AND BEACH EROSION PROMPTS VISIT FROM ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS COMMANDER

Hurricane Isaias caused severe dune and beach erosion along the city's nine miles of beach.

Yesterday (August 4), Lt. Col. Rachel Honderd, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Charleston District 88th District Engineer and Commander (center in photo), visited the North Myrtle Beach oceanfront with Mayor Marilyn Hatley and City Manager Mike Mahaney to view the erosion damage.

In the photo, the three stand in front of a severely eroded dune. Prior to the storm, the dune extended out to the very short broken wood posts (far left in photo) that formed the initial line of sand fencing for the dune. The larger wooden posts (foreground) formed the second line of sand fencing.

Commander Honderd was accompanied by Tommy Fennel, Branch Chief for the Conway Field Office, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Regulatory Division, Charleston District, South Atlantic Division.
