Hurricane Milton was a rapidly intensifying major hurricane in October 2024 that reached Category 5 strength over the Gulf of Mexico before making landfall on Florida’s west coast. It weakened slightly before landfall but still brought destructive winds, heavy rain, and significant storm surge across the region.
Sarasota County was heavily impacted, with widespread flooding, wind damage, and power outages reported throughout coastal and inland communities. Barrier islands like Casey Key saw some of the most visible storm surge effects, with coastal erosion, beach overwash, and property damage in low-lying areas.
As Milton moved across Florida, it continued to produce dangerous conditions including tornadoes, downed trees, and additional flooding farther inland. Recovery efforts across Sarasota County and surrounding areas focused on restoring power, clearing debris, and assessing damage to homes, infrastructure, and coastal zones.
