A few tips for photographing fall in the Black Hills: shoot in the first or last hour of light, midday flattens the color. Look for spots where gold aspen sits against dark ponderosa pine; that contrast is what makes Black Hills fall photos distinct. And don't forget to back up and get the wide landscape shot, not just the close-up of a single tree. Spearfish Canyon and the overlooks along Iron Mountain Road are both reliable spots for this.

Iron Mountain Road connects Mount Rushmore to Custer State Park through pigtail bridges, tight curves, and tunnels — several framed so Mount Rushmore appears dead-center through the opening. 🍁Custer State Park's trail system gets overshadowed by the scenic drives, but it shouldn't. Cathedral Spires is a short, steep climb to a genuinely dramatic payoff. Sunday Gulch is a full-day loop through a narrow granite canyon. And Black Elk Peak...the highest point between the Rocky Mountains and the Pyrenees — rewards the climb with a fire lookout tower and a view that covers four states on a clear day.

🏡Not everyone wants to pitch a tent, and that's fine by us. Our Rustic Cabins at HTR Black Hills sleep 4 with a queen bed and bunk bed, linens and towels provided, plus TV and wall AC.

No in-cabin water.. the bathhouse is a short walk away, but you'll have full access to the community fire pit and everything else camp life offers. Real camping, without the packing list.

HTR Black Hills is officially closed for the 2026 season. It's been a full one...Sturgis riders, Buffalo Roundup weekends, Friday night music, a season's worth of campfires. We'll be back open next May, and we'll be right here on your feed in the meantime with everything the Black Hills have to offer in the off-season.
