Most people know Topsail Island as a quiet barrier island with good fishing and warm sand. Almost nobody knows it spent three years as a classified Navy missile range. 🚀

Between 1946 and 1948, the U.S. Navy conducted Operation Bumblebee on Topsail Island, a top-secret program to develop the first supersonic anti-aircraft missile in American history. The island was chosen for its isolation and its long, unobstructed beach. Eight observation towers were constructed along the island's length — distinctive round concrete structures that local residents would later call "Pumpkin Towers." From these towers, Navy engineers tracked rockets fired from a beach launch rail, gathering telemetry on speed, trajectory, and performance.

The program was directly descended from wartime German rocket research, and it fed directly into the Terrier missile program that armed U.S. Navy ships through the 1950s and into the Cold War era. When the program ended in 1948, the Navy quietly departed and Topsail Island returned to its usual quiet existence. The Pumpkin Towers were sold off to private buyers, some converted into beach houses. A few still stand today, faded concrete cylinders rising oddly from the dunes, the only visible remnants of what was, for three years, one of the most classified military installations on the East Coast. 🌊🔭

The sunrises and sunsets are beautiful in the late summer/fall on Topsail Island. The Bungalow by the Sea is offering partial weeks with a 3 night minimum at only $250 per night. August 16-September 2, September 9-24, October 3-10, October 24-31 are available.

Just like that! Summer will be over and you’ll have missed out on a wonderful beach vacation. Last 2 weeks of August are available to sneak in some end of summer beach time on beautiful Topsail Island.

Even dark clouds are pretty at the beach! Only 2 summer weeks (last 2 weeks in August) are open at the Bungalow. Don’t let the summer slip away without a week or two on beautiful Topsail Island.
