It has definitely been one of those weeks at the office.

We had a couple in their mid-80s stay with us recently who genuinely need assisted living, but ended up here instead. You hate to see folks at that stage of life without family support, but in this business, you see a little bit of everything.

Checked the radar last night: “Rain starting promptly at 10:30 AM.”

Game on.

I was out at the motel at the crack of dawn like a man possessed. Push mower roaring, w**d eater flying, sweat dripping, racing against the incoming doom. By 10:29 AM, I shut the engine off, wiped my brow, and stood there like a champion who beat Mother Nature at her own game.

I walk inside, and my wife looks up from her phone: “Oh, they updated it. It’s not supposed to rain until 5:00 PM now.”

Not a single cloud in the sky. Just me, exhausted, standing in the driveway smelling like two-stroke oil and defeat.

I swear, local meteorologists in the 1980s had a better handle on the weather with a magnetic map and a squeaky marker than they do today with supercomputers, satellites, and radar algorithms.

At least the grass is cut. Time for an early nap.
