Nowata isn’t just a nice place to visit it’s a great place to stay. We are honored to have one of the most beautiful murals that captures the history and inclusivity of this beautiful community!

Imagine picking up a newspaper in Nowata in the 1890s and seeing these words printed across the top:

"Nowata, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory."

Not Oklahoma.

Not even a territory on the path to statehood.

At that time, Nowata was part of the Cherokee Nation, governed under Cherokee laws and traditions. The town itself had been laid out by the Cherokee Nation, and residents lived in a place whose identity was deeply connected to Native history and culture.

When we walk our downtown streets today, admire a mural, visit a historic building, or gather for community events, we are standing in a place with a story that began long before Oklahoma became the 46th state in 1907.

The murals we celebrate today help tell the story of who we are. But they also remind us to honor those who came before us—the Cherokee citizens, Delaware families, railroad workers, merchants, oil pioneers, veterans, artists, and everyday people who helped shape this community.

History isn't just found in books.

It's painted on walls.
It's embedded in brick streets.
It's hidden in old newspaper headlines.
And it's all around us here in Nowata.

Have you ever seen an old document, photograph, or newspaper that referred to Nowata as part of the Cherokee Nation? We'd love to hear about it in the comments.
