🌲 🌲 June & July 2024 Trail Notes 🌲 🌲
•Glacier Point & Tioga Pass are Open
•Mist Trail - July-October, Monday-Thursday from 7am-3:30pm a section of the Mist Trail will be closed at the John Muir Trail (JMT) junction to the top of Vernal Fall. During the closure use the JMT to access the top of Vernal Fall. NOTE: Mist Trail will be open Friday-Sunday & holidays. The trail will be open from 3:30pm-7am but it may occasionally need to remain closed overnight for safety reasons.
•John Muir Trail (JMT) is closed between Clark Point and Panorama Trail junction (near the top of Nevada Fall) until late June (tentatively) due to a large rockfall. Closed section points of the JMT are highlighted in yellow on the Map. It is possible to hike to the top Nevada Fall via the upper portion of the Mist Trail by way of Silver Apron Footbridge.
•A short section of the Valley Loop Trail at The Ahwahnee is closed due to rockfall risk, although a short detour is available.

Nelder Grove, comparable to Mariposa Grove, is closing to the public July 1, 2024. Visit it now - Tours being offered in the month of June.

Nelder Grove is open for those that want to explore in Nelder. The gate is closed, so you will need to walk around the gate. The Chimney trail is a mess with several trees down at this time and I do not recommend this trail. The Bull Buck, if you take the trail on the left, it is not too bad. There are about 5 trees down, but the downed trees are not huge. They should be cleared fairly soon. Feel free to call or text me if you have any questions: 559-760-9108.
Notice: the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway Association is sponsoring this in support of Nelder Grove. Friends of Nelder Grove appreciates their support. I will be offering free tours in June on Saturday and Sunday. SIZE IS LIMITED SO DON'T WAIT TOO LONG. Saturday is an easier sauntering tour and Sunday is more rigourous. Use the number above to call me if you are interested. *If you have a larger group of family/friends I may be able to offer a tour during the week.

Visiting Yosemite in the Winter?
Wondering about the weather, road conditions, and will tire chains/ cables be required?
❄ ❄ ❄ ❄ ❄ ❄

Here is Yosemite & nearby weather and road info...

1) Tioga Pass ( Highway 120 East) and Glacier Point Road (Beyond Badger Pass Ski Area) close in winter, roughly in November, and remain closed until May or June. Here is a history of open/close dates:
https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/seasonal.htm

2) Use NOAA website to get weather specific to a zip code or address. Yosemite zip code: 95389

3) Use Caltrans for road conditions outside Yosemite. Search Highways on which you will be traveling (e.g. 41, 49, 140)
https://roads.dot.ca.gov

4) Using Caltrans quick map, under "Options" you can see if any road closures, or chain control areas
https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov

5) If staying in Oakhurst, your route likely is the Highway 41 and over Deadwood, 3000-ft elevation. If it ever receives snow, Caltrans is quick to plow and sand the road. Deadwood web camera:

Highway 41 & 49 Junction web camera (in town of Oakhurst):
https://cwwp2.dot.ca.gov/vm/loc/d6/mad41atrte49.htm

6) If visiting Yosemite, November to March, all vehicles must have R2 chains/cables in their possession, even 4WD & rental vehicles. If renting a vehicle, check with the rental company about allowing the use of tire cables, or if provided.
In the event you come across a CHP checkpoint & don't have R2 tire chains/cables in your possession, they may turn you around.

7) Road conditions inside Yosemite, call 209/372-0200 (press 1 then 1)

(8) Yosemite NPS website has weather listed by location. You can click the interactive map and/or scroll past the map and click the location name.
