In 1899, William and Eliza Wheeler built the first cottage on Birch Point as a place to relax with friends and enjoy summer at the lake. Their son Dean expanded upon the idea with half a dozen more camps for rent, and their great-great-grandchild Robyn and partner Phyllis are delighted to be able to carry on the tradition. Located on a peninsula on 1048-acre Salmon Lake, these spacious, private ho
usekeeping cabins accommodate six people comfortably. Each is right on the water with its own dock, and a wood stove or fireplace. There's a fire pit for the all-important marshmallow sacrifice. Kayaks and canoes are available free of charge for day use, or may be rented for the week. If serious fishing is on your agenda, you can rent a boat with a motor and match wits with the perch and bass. Other local wildlife includes loons, barred owls, bald eagles, osprey, blue herons, hawks, kingfishers, beaver, muskrat, otters, and mink. We also see the occasional bobcat, red fox, and moose. (No bears...yet!)
With a mile of shoreline and 100 acres of woods, the property feels secluded, but all the amenities of life are just a few miles away. Downtown Oakland has an IGA grocery store, laundromat, library, breakfast/brunch restaurant, and two pizza shops; and Waterville, just a few miles further, offers movie theaters, coffee shops, farmers' markets, several grocery stores, dozens of restaurants, and the usual big-box stores. Our central Maine location is perfect for day-trips: hiking opportunities within a two-hour drive range from shorter nearby trails in the Kennebec Highlands to sections of the Appalachian Trail, including Saddleback Mountain and Baxter State Park's Mount Katahdin. River rafting is also a popular activity in the region. The Maine coast is only a 1-hour drive from Oakland, and Mount Desert Island's Acadia National Park is a two-hour drive. Freeport, famous for its outlet stores, is an hour away, and Portland just a bit further. However, once you arrive and settle in, it's quite possible that you will be perfectly content to stay put and enjoy a slower pace of life for a while.
