I had 2 guys come in cemetery this morning looking for grandparents that had passed away back in the 60's. They hadn't been back to Ocala in years and hadn't been to their grandparents graveside in at least 50 years. I helped them find their graveside and of course we got to talking. These guys were my age and had gone to Forest High School. Come to find out the grandparents came from up North and on their way to Ft. Meyers they stopped in Ocala to go to church. They never left. Later, the father met the mother here and these two guys I met today exist because of fate. A pretty cool story and I was glad to meet some Good Ol' Hometown Ocala Peeps. This is reason 101 why I like what I do...

The Way It Was...

Picture it 2010 - 2012 "ish", I believe it was. I was working at the Marion County Sheriff's Office on midnight shift patrolling the Ocklawaha, Weirsdale, Moss Bluff, Big Scrub and Ocala National Forest area of Southeastern Marion County. Working nights the only place to get a coffee was at the Circle K in Weirsdale or run all the way out County Road 42 into the Lake County and go to the Circle K in Umatilla. For the longest time, If you're way out in the woods late at night there's nothing and nowhere to get a coffee. Then, out on Forest Road 8/SE 182nd Ave Road there is a neighborhood called Moss Bluff Haven and down the dirt road going into the area opened a little "Country Bar" named Hunter's Crossing. Over time I got to meet and know the owners, David Slaughter and Cheryl Slaughter, very nice people BTW. The place was a local hangout during the week. On the weekends it would be busy. Although, I never had any trouble there or even got a call for service there. I would pull up out front, park my patrol car right by the front door and leave my parking lights on, as if to say - Hey, I'm coming inside, please put a pot of coffee on for me. I'd go inside and sure enough Cheryl would have a pot of coffee on for me. I would go behind the bar, get a coffee cup, open the fridge to get cream and visit for a spell. Not knowing the situation, dispatch always freaked out because I was "Checked Out" at a "Bar" by myself. David and Cheryl closed the bar and the last I had seen them was in Belleview before they moved to North Carolina. We had became friends. I just seen where Cheryl had passed away. Sometimes Facebook doesn't keep you connected with everyone and you miss post. Can't believe I missed it for this long. I just felt compelled to take a moment and tell the story of how we'd met and what I thought of her. Rest high on that mountain top, Lady. David, I'm so sorry to see this. She will live within you and will be waiting for you to join her when it's your time...

I had a lady ask me today "What does it cost?". Well, Mrs. Linda, I would urge you to come sit with me for a consultation and lay out every aspect of the wants and needs for you and Mr. Bob. There are too many variables to just throw you a number. Do you want flowers? No flowers? What prayer cards you want? What casket? A wooden casket? A metal casket? Do you want a visitation? No visitation? Funeral services at the funeral home? Graveside? Do you want doves released at your Graveside? Would Bob want Amazing Grace played on the bagpipes at his Graveside? Would you like a harpist to play at your Graveside? Would you like catering to be brought in, when bob passes, so you aren't overwhelmed with people bombarding your home after a long emotional day? Or, vice versa? Is Bob a Veteran? Does he want Military Honors? Does he want a draped flag on his casket? Does he want a folded flag? This is why you need to sit with me. When you are sitting with me, we aren't ordering a #1 off the McDonald's value meal. We design your arrangements together for you and we lay out the details for your plan. Failing to plan is a plan that fails those that we leave behind...
