Thor isn't the only one who loves a hammer. In our Geology & Stream class, students use a hammer (or more accurately a "Rock Pick") to crack open rocks and identify them as metamorphic, sedimentary, or igneous. After smashing open rocks, they'll explore the color and texture of minerals with rock paint.

Although it's not the type of Rock most of the chaperones prefer, we still think it's pretty solid.

How do you build a good team? We recommend a sturdy hammer, but if that fails, you can always sign up for a team-building session at Alliance Redwoods!

During this class our staff use low-ropes and initiatives to explore the five Cs of any group:
• Challenge
• Communication
• Care
• Cooperation
• Commitment
• (BONUS) Comedy

Over a couple hours the group can move through the four stages of a successful team: forming, norming, storming, and performing.

Although the coastal Redwoods is the tallest tree species on the planet (380ft and counting), it’s roots only grow 6-12 feet beneath the ground. To maintain stability, a redwoods will stretch out its roots a hundred very in every direction grabbing onto the roots of other redwoods trees. It gets even wilder though; they don’t just grab onto the roots of other redwoods, they actually fuse together. Through the shared root system of a forest, redwoods can share water, nutrients, and (using mycelium fungal networks) even information. What’s roots you?
