In 1917, a twenty-year-old Annie Spencer moved from Ocracoke Island, North Carolina to Ocean City, Maryland to explore new opportunities. Soon after moving, she married U.S. Coast Guardsman, Levin J. Bunting Jr., and like many women in Ocean City, Annie rented rooms from her two-story cape cod house to summertime guests. Over the years, Annie and the Ocracoke Cottages accommodated countless guests. Even as the Fire of 1925 swept across the island and the 1933 hurricane carved out the inlet, Annie kept her doors open. In the 1950s, she decided to grow her business by building five apartments along Dorchester Street. Stay tuned as we show you pieces of our newest exhibit, A Feminine Touch: The story of the women who had a hand in shaping a town.

Day thirteen of Threads of Ocean City

Each day we will showcase a T-shirt from Ocean City’s past. This historic apparel represents the businesses and organizations that have made Ocean City what it is today!

In 1978 Tio Gringo’s Mexican Cantina restaurant, located on 53rd street opened its doors. Owners Pam and Macky Stansell decided to open, another restaurant called Macky's Bayside Bar & Grill in 1994. Tio Gringo’s Mexican Cantina closed in the late 1990s, with Macky’s taking on new traditions for vacationers and locals alike.

Don’t forget, we would also like to see your old Ocean City T-shirts! Please provide a picture of your favorite Ocean City T-shirt in the comments below.
