Wednesdays are for Water - Hiwassee River
Flowing below the bluffs is the mighty Hiwassee River, the one John Muir spoke of when he said, “My path all to-day led me along the leafy banks of the Hiwassee, a most impressive mountain river. Its channel is very rough, as it crosses the edges of upturned rock strata, some of them standing at right angles, or glancing off obliquely to right and left. Thus a multitude of short, resounding cataracts are produced, and the river is restrained from the headlong speed due to its volume and the inclination of its bed.”
Flowing north out of Georgia into North Carolina and then Tennessee, the Hiwassee is 147 miles in length and is the first designated Scenic River in Tennessee. It is dammed by the Tennessee Valley Authority in four locations: Chatuge Dam, Mission Dam (not owned by TVA), Hiwassee Dam, and Apalachia Dam.
The Tennessee Scenic Rivers Program is intended to preserve and protect the free flowing, unpolluted and outstanding scenic, recreational, geologic, botanical, fish, wildlife, historic, or cultural values of selected rivers or river segments in the state. There are 17 rivers or segments of rivers in the state scenic rivers program, and you can enjoy the Hiwassee from the water, from the bluffs, or even from the roadway, so come see us.
