OGDENSBURG IN THE SPOTLIGHT! - I am very proud to say that Ogdensburg's colonial history and our very beautiful Lighthouse Point will be the star of the opening episode of Christine the History Queen's second season, premiering in December on PBS television. This past summer, I convinced Christine Darrow, hostess of the PBS TV series on upstate history, to return for an episode on Ogdensburg's Fort La Presentation (our French role during the French and Indian War) and Fort Oswegatchie (our British role during the American Revolutionary War). With help from the Fort La Presentation Association, Forsyth's Ri**es, and many reenactors from across Canada and the Northeastern U.S., Christine put together an outstanding episode to celebrate our nation's 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution. This show will do a great deal to introduce Ogdensburg's magnificent and historic waterfront to people across the U.S. and Canada. (You'll also see folks from past events over the years.) The famed Sherman Inn Library will also make a cameo, offering a wealth of information on Ogdensburg's history. To promote the Greater Ogdensburg area's restaurants, stores, and historic places, we need new, innovative ways to introduce ourselves to a national audience. Christine's television show is helping people learn about many of upstate New York's little-known places and historical events. Stay tuned to learn how to catch her upcoming shows. US-CANADIAN RELATIONS - While many adults bemoan the state of U.S.-Canadian relations, members of the Ogdensburg Free Academy and Norwood Norfolk Key Clubs recently returned after spending a day with Canadian Key Clubs from across Ottawa, Canada. They didn't spend the day debating; they spent it working together to make life better for children in need. By finding common ground and ways to work together, they sent a powerful message: we need to focus on what brings us together and how we can work together. I want to thank Key Club Faculty Advisor Ruth Anne Barkley, Norwood Norfolk Key Club Advisor Patty Dean, and the young people from both clubs for setting an important example for adults across our two great nations. We need to cross the border and find ways to work together so our 2-century history of friendship isn't forgotten, regardless of debates over trade and other passing government differences.

MICRO COURSE - The State University of New York at Canton invited me to teach a "micro course" on prostitution in Ogdensburg and the North Country during the Gilded Age. I was very pleased to be invited to talk about my book "Hookers, Heroes, and Hoodlums (More Tales of the St. Lawrence Valley Grandpa Never Told You." It's open to students, faculty, staff and the public. It will also be live online.

SHORELINE CLEANUP- I was very proud to spend Saturday morning with my co-advisor Ruth Anne Barkley and the members of the award winning Ogdensburg Free Academy Key Club cleaning up Wheathouse Bay. Last week our members cleaned up the Maple City Trail as part of our fall community service program.

"Speakeasies & Scarlet Ladies" event Sunday, Sept. 20 At O'burg History Museum
OGDENSBURG - The Ogdensburg History Museum is hosting a speakeasy night on Sunday, Sept. 20.
The event's theme will be "Speakeasies & Scarlet Ladies: Prostitution and Prohibition in the North Country," officials said.
The immersive afternoon of local history will feature keynote speaker, St. Lawrence County Legislator and noted local author Jim Reagen.
"This event brings a fascinating time in our local history to life in a way that is engaging, educational, and fun," said Museum Director Julie Madlin.
The presentation will explore the "hidden history of the Prohibition era and vice operations" in the North Country, Madlin said.
Following the presentation, Reagen will be available to sign copies of his books.
"Recreating the thrill of an illicit 1920s haunt, a door bouncer will admit only those savvy enough to whisper the secret password—the city’s famed bootlegging nickname," library officials said.
Archival photo collections will be projected alongside a dedicated Prohibition Mocktail Bar.
The event will also include "Bootlegger Bingo," an interactive local-history-themed twist on the classic game. Players will compete for prizes including donated bar glassware, museum day passes, and annual memberships.
"Vices Bundle" advance tickets will be $15 for members and $25 for non-members and includes guaranteed admission, one themed mocktail and three interactive bingo cards.
Regular admission at the door will be free for Museum members and $10 for non-members.
Advance tickets and registration information are available online. Due to limited speakeasy capacity, pre-purchasing the "Vices Bundle" is strongly encouraged. The event is being held at the Ogdensburg History Museum at 206 Ford Street, next to the Department of Motor Vehicle office.
