GET YOUR BELL! - July 4th is coming! As the chair of St. Lawrence County's 250th Anniversary Commission, I would like to ask for your help in raising awareness of a special way your family can help celebrate our nation's 250th birthday on the 4th of July. We are asking everyone to ring a bell for liberty on our nation's 250th birthday at 10 a.m. for two and a half minutes. Ask your church, parents, grandparents, children and grandchildren to celebrate America's 250th by ringing a bell for liberty at 10 a.m. on July 4th for two and a half minutes. They can ring a bell in their yard, on their porch, out their window or wherever they are. They can get a bell for each member of their family to celebrate this important moment in their nation's history and be a part of this important celebration. Bells are available at the Ogdensburg, Canton and Massena chamber of commerce offices for just $5. Please share!
Please promote this important event on your social media everyone can join the celebration and encourage them to get bells for every member of their family so each child and adult can have a special moment to remember what they did on America's 250th!

We are very lucky that the tree overhanging our property came down into the street and not into our historic award-winning Sherman Inn or our neighbor's house. No one was hurt. Thank you to the Ogdensburg Fire Department, Ogdensburg's Department of Public Works and National Grid for responding in minutes. We are lucky to have them. They do a great job for our community and too often are taken for granted.

CITY HISTORIAN - I want to thank Ogdensburg City Historian Julie Madlin for helping me tell the story of Isaac Johnson, an important figure in our city's history. Johnson was a child growing up in pre-Civil War Kentucky when his own father decided he could make a great deal of money by selling him, his mother and siblings into slavery because they were black. Seven-year-old Isaac watched in terror as his own father sold his family into bo***ge. My most recent book, Hookers, Heroes and Hoodlums (More Tales of the St. Lawrence Valley Grandpa Never Told You) tells about how Isaac escaped slavery, joined the Union Army and fought to make sure no other child experienced the horrors he saw. Isaac eventually became a successful stone mason and architect, settled in Ogdensburg, wrote a book and earned the respect and admiration of his community. The buildings he built like the Waddington Town Hall stand as monuments to his legacy. Thank you, Christine the History Queen for including this important chapter in Ogdensburg's history in Season 2 of your show. I am glad my book helped spur your interest in bringing this story about the North Country to anational audience on PBS.

Introducing Ogdensburg to a national audience will help our community attract more tourists and visitors. Christine the History Queen had her History show renewed for a second season. She is featuring more episodes on Ogdensburg's rich heritage and some of our important citizens who played key roles in the North Country's history on her PBS television show. I was proud to spend some time telling Christine about our community's role in important events in our nation's history. Christine has found my research library at the Sherman Inn to be a valuable resource and a great place to conduct interviews for the show. It's important to teach our young people that History Happened Here and it's up to all of us to preserve it. When we capitalize on our rich heritage, we give tourists a reason to visit our outstanding locally owned restaurants, our stores, and our attractions. Thank you, Christine Darrow, for including the Sherman Inn and Ogdensburg in your upcoming second season. If you haven't seen her first season of shows, you can see them on YouTube, PBS.org or WPBS.org. The Sherman Inn and Ogdensburg's Presidential history is featured in episode 7.

You and your family can join in making this day a memorable event by ringing a bell for liberty at 10 a.m. for two and a half minutes. As the chair of the St. Lawrence County Legislature's 250th Anniversary Commission, we want you to participate in this important event and spread the word! You, your children, grandchildren and friends can all participate in this important moment in our nation's history. You can go out in your yard, stand on your porch, or even open a window and ring a bell to proclaim this special moment when we can all remember what brings us together as Americans. Ask your church to ring its bell at 10 a.m. for two and a half minutes. St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce has bells for sale at their offices in Ogdensburg, Canton and Massena for just $5 each. Congratulations to Billy and Maureen Hosmer for believing in Ogdensburg and investing in our community. They are saving a historic landmark and bringing back craft beer brewing to our city after an almost 100 year absence. Ogdensburg's historic Arnold Brewery was located just a couple of blocks from our new brewery pub

OGDENSBURG — The St. Lawrence Valley Horsemen's Association(SLVHA) will be holding its first Horse Show of the season on Sunday, May 31st at 10 a.m. at the Paradis Acres show grounds on Linden Road. Proof of current rabies(with in 1 year) and Negative Coggins(with in 2 years) is required and membership in the SLVHA(which can be purchased when you enter that day). Entry fee for the day will be $30 or $8 per class. Ribbons only. Class list is posted on the SLVHA face book page.
