Earlier this month, Wayne went to Maine to open our cottage for the season. We do not have coverage for our Vintage Market right now, so only one of us can go at a time now. After a long cold winter, there is always clean-up needed inside & outside the cottage to get it ready for the summer season. This year we needed a new gas stove as well. We always plant flowers in the flower boxes & garden beds. Here is to a beautiful Maine summer!

Wayne Gattilia volunteered to go to Maine last week,to open the cottage. I had a big horse show last weekend and have another horse show this weekend, so I couldn’t make it. Since the water & propane are turned off for the winter, we need to go up and get the cottage already for the season around May 1st each year.
We also plant lots of flowers around the cottage, in window boxes and hanging baskets. Wayne was able to sneak in some antiquing as well. We love our cottage here and never want to leave. We rent it out some when we are not able to use it, so we needed to have it ready for the season.

While these picture of cottages at Birch Knoll were taken in the fall, they have us thinking about the spring opening in May. Can’t wait! Our cottages were built in the 1920’s and originally used as motel cottages in Ogunquit, ME. They are now individually owned as cottage condominiums. There is a common pool, laundry room, fire pit and 12 acres of beautiful grounds full of wildlife. It is a very peaceful place just minutes from the vibrant downtown Ogunquit scene & beach.

We came up for a week to ”open” our cottage for the season. 7 years ago, on our 1st trip to our new cottage, we painted it. This year it needed some attention, so we did some scraping, priming/sealing and put another coat of paint on, to freshen it up. We also planted flowers in the window boxes, flower pots and in the yard. It is all ready for a nice summer for us and guests.

I received this pic of our cottage with a rafter (group of turkeys together) out front today. Due to the pandemic, we were not able to go to Maine at all this year. We are hoping things improve and we can go next year. It truly is beautiful in Maine and we love our little cottage in Birch Knoll.

The Wisteria vine is in full bloom now. We planted this vine the first summer we had the cottage, hoping one day it would bloom like this! Each year it blooms more and more (but also grows more & more vine that I have to trim back).
Due to the pandemic, we have not been up to open our cottage for the summer, or plant any flowers. That makes me sad, as I truly love this cottage. But I would like to give a special Thank You to our neighbor Gail, for making my day today, by sending me this pic. Thank you Gail!

Today I received this wonderful painting of our cottage as a thank you gift. Claire & Josh are wonderful friends of ours, they stayed in the cottage in June. Claire painted this beautiful painting of the cottage, I just LOVE it! Thank you Claire!

When we bought this cottage almost 5 years ago, there was no landscaping what so ever in the yard. This week we tackled a big project in the back yard. The back yard is a rock ledge which sits above a pretty field with woods behind. The ledge was covered in large pine roots and uneven large rock. We covered it with decorative stone which leveled it out. It is much more enjoyable now!

The ornamental flowering cherry (pink) and pear (white) trees I planted are blooming now and look great! The pink cherry blossoms are large and seem to be double. They are so pretty. I am especially happy about this, as the 1st cherry tree I planted there did not survive it’s first extra cold winter. This 2nd one, struggled fighting off insects & a deer deer attack (nibbled off a lot of the green buds last spring) but it is doing great now!
