The Yough does something that surprises a lot of first-time visitors: it flows north. North-flowing rivers are less common, though the explanation is simple: rivers follow the downhill shape of the land.

The Yough has some famous company. The Nile, Florida’s St. Johns, and the Red River of the North all flow north too.

At the turn of the 20th century, a round trip from Pittsburgh to Ohiopyle cost one dollar. The train brought so many visitors that Ferncliff once had a hotel and a dance pavilion.

These images show the Ohiopyle those passengers stepped into: the mill beside the falls in 1892, a January 1899 page from Book of the Royal Blue, and the four-story Ferncliff Hotel. Youghiogheny looks like a whole trip before you even say it. Around Ohiopyle, it’s pronounced yaw-ki-GAY-nee, and nearly everyone shortens it to Yough, pronounced yawk.

Meadow Run's natural waterslides are one of the clearest places to see moving water reshape Ohiopyle. Sand and gravel carried by the creek have polished twisting channels into a broad sandstone ledge that drops about 20 feet over 250 feet.

The current can be powerful, so follow the posted warnings and enjoy the view from an established spot. Watch the channels closely and you can see the creek's work written right into the rock!

Jonathan Run packs a lot into a 1.6-mile out-and-back. The trail follows the stream toward the Great Allegheny Passage, with rhododendron along the banks and small cascades slipping over dark rock.

Why does Ohiopyle Falls drop at this exact spot? The Youghiogheny River crosses a shelf of hard Pottsville sandstone, then plunges where the riverbed steps down to a lower level.

The river is slowly wearing away the ledge along natural cracks in the rock. Next time you're at the overlook, look across the face of the falls and see if you can spot the sandstone shelf beneath all that whitewater!
