Recently completed the landscape design and installation for this pedestrian plaza outside the B.D. Hill Company offices in Silo Square in Southaven, Mississippi.

A minimalist clean, classic design using green velvet boxwoods, soft touch hollies, and emerald green arborvitae , and white-blooming gumpo azaleas, hydrangeas, Ice Cap roses, Natchez Crape Myrtles, and Fringe trees for year around enjoyment by visitors to Silo Square.

Looking forward to seeing this pedestrian plaza mature in the coming seasons!

Green lawn yesterday? Brown lawn today? Your lawn may have an infestation of fall army worms.

Fall army worms can eat a lawn in a very short amount of time! If you see worms in the grass eating grass blades down to the thatch layer, check to see if there is an inverted "y" on the head of the worm. Inverted "y" = army worm.

PRO TIP: not immediately seeing damage, but seeing birds feeding in your lawn? Take a close look as sometimes lawns experience small infestations that have not manifested into a brown, dead lawn appearance.

If you have found army worms in your lawn, spray the lawn with an insecticide with the active ingredient Permethrin such as Hi-Yield's 38 Special. Follow manufacturer's label for application rates.

TUESDAY TIP ! As we transition from a wet spring and enter the hotter, dryer summer months, this would be a great time to check and make adjustments your irrigation watering schedules.

4 Quick tips!

1. Install a rain sensor on your irrigation system if you do not have one. Why? Prevents overwatering by an irrigation system if there's been rain showers in your landscape.
2. Check the soil moisture in different areas of your landscape. Too dry? Add time to an individual zone. Too wet? Reduce time to an individual zone.
3. Skip a day (or two) between watering. This allows your landscape to absorb water and dry between waterings. This cycle also encourages deep root growth.
4. Utilize your irrigation controller's Seasonal Adjust function to quickly add or subtract time to the established irrigation schedule based on current precipitation patterns in your area.

Pro Tip! - Sync irrigation schedule with your lawn mowing schedule to prevent damage to turf areas by mowers. Avoid watering day before and day of regularly scheduled mowing day.

American Beautyberry is a great plant! I enjoy incorporating this plant into planting designs!

Mississippi native plant Callicarpa americana is also known commonly and affectionately as the American beautyberry! This plant is commonly found along the edges of woodlands/wild areas and was named a Mississippi Medallion winner for 2020.

This deciduous shrub starts the year off as a leafless wallflower. New growth starts pushing out in midspring and joins the green background while gardeners are planting and enjoying all the colorful annuals. Even when beautyberry flowers, it is overshadowed. The flowers are produced in the leaf axils, and you really have to look closely to appreciate the delicate, pale-pink flowers.

American beautyberry produces bright magenta-purple berries in tight clusters that are held right on and all around the stems. Berries displayed along the arching stems of the straight species draw the most attention. Some plants have such prolific berry production that it seems the leaves are growing out of the clusters.

Left to its own devices, American beautyberry will easily grow to at least 5 feet tall and wide. This size, along with its loose and open growing habit, can make the plant look just a bit unruly for most landscapes.

To keep beautyberry looking tidy and good, prune it back in the early spring. Prune back to about 6 inches to encourage the new growth to be fuller and more compact. But you have to do this every year to maintain an ordered appearance.

This shrub will grow in most landscape soil conditions, and it tolerates drought, but for best growth, maintain consistent soil moisture. Look for planting areas that provide afternoon shade. While beautyberry can grow in full sun, it produces more berries when there is some protection from the afternoon heat load.
