It's that time of year! Our first bison calf of the year was born and is settling into the herd quite nicely! 🦬

Did you know bison calves are also called red dogs because of their reddish tan color? Their color allows them to hide from predators that are red-green color blind. Their color will begin to shift to the traditional dark brown after a few months and that is when the shoulder hump and horns will also begin to grow.

Why did the follow the Old Southwest Trail? To see the historic sites!

This ancient route is in the path of the eclipse. The moon’s shadow will cross it in minutes, but it took 19th-century travelers days or weeks to traverse the terrain to settle in Arkansas or Texas.

Today, I-30 and US Hwy 67 roughly follow the Old Southwest Trail. Many places still bear witness to the history of the trail, such as Davidsonville Historic State Park, Historic Arkansas Museum, Old State House Museum, and Historic Washington State Park.
