🍁 One of Michigan’s Finest Hidden Gems — Presque Isle River Waterfalls! 🍂

Tucked away in the western reaches of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is one of the most spectacular stretches of river in Michigan!

The Presque Isle River features three breathtaking waterfalls — Manabezho Falls, Manido Falls, and Nawadaha Falls — each with its own unique beauty and character.

What makes this area especially remarkable is the river itself! Over thousands of years, rushing water has carved its way through ancient bedrock, creating dramatic gorges, swirling potholes, natural rock formations, and powerful cascades before finally emptying into the mighty Lake Superior.

🥾 A roughly 2-mile hiking loop takes you past all three waterfalls, with spectacular overlooks, forested trails, stairways, and a scenic suspension bridge crossing the river near its mouth.

Whether you’re visiting during the brilliant colors of autumn, the roaring spring runoff, or the peaceful summer months, this is one of those places that never disappoints!

🍁 Western U.P. Fall Color Update — October 7🍁

Fall color is still putting on a beautiful show across the Western U.P.! 🍂

🌊 Along the Lake Superior shoreline, we’re still around 50–60% color change, with plenty of green mixed among the reds, oranges, and yellows.

🍁 As you travel inland and away from the lake, the colors build quickly, reaching peak conditions across much of the interior.

🍂 Farther south, some areas have now moved past peak, especially in the lowlands where leaves are beginning to fall.

The good news? There’s still plenty of fall color ahead! With the shoreline running behind the interior, we expect beautiful color to be found somewhere across the Western U.P. for another 7–10 days.

🍁 WESTERN U.P. FALL COLOR UPDATE — OCTOBER 1! 🍁

The Western U.P. is putting on a SHOW right now! 🍂🔥

We’re seeing an incredible range of color depending on how close you are to Lake Superior. Bergland and Greenland are already around 70–80%, with the southern reaches of the Porcupine Mountains around 70% and quickly approaching peak.

Meanwhile, right along the Lake Superior shoreline in Ontonagon, we’re still only around 40–50% — which means we have plenty more color to come! 😍

This is one of the BEST times to visit because you can experience completely different stages of fall in a single drive. Head inland for brilliant reds, oranges and golds, then return to the lakeshore where the season is still building. 🍁🌊

And farther north toward Houghton and the Keweenaw, the colors continue their march toward peak, giving us what should be several more beautiful weeks of fall scenery across the region.

🍁 WESTERN U.P. FALL COLOR UPDATE — SEPTEMBER 25 🍁

The transformation is officially underway! 🍂

We’ve reached that point in the season where you’ll find fall color just about anywhere you travel in the Western U.P. — but how much color you’ll see depends greatly on how far you are from Lake Superior.

🟢 Along the Lake Superior shoreline: roughly 15–25% color, with plenty of green still remaining.

🟡🟠 Head inland and the change happens quickly. About 30 miles from the lake, some areas are already approaching 40–50% color, with increasingly vibrant yellows, oranges and reds.

That means we’re entering one of our favorite parts of fall: every drive looks a little different, and every day brings noticeably more color.

If you’re visiting soon, don’t think you need to wait for “peak.” Right now you can experience the contrast of Lake Superior’s still-green shoreline, increasingly colorful inland forests, waterfalls, scenic drives and the first brilliant pockets of autumn — all in the same trip.

And the best is still ahead. 🍁

🍁 Fall Color Update — September 19 🍁

The colors are starting to burst here in Michigan’s western Upper Peninsula!

Along the Lake Superior shoreline, we’re still pretty green with splashes of color beginning to show. But head just 10–15 miles inland and fall is arriving fast — we’re seeing some beautiful, vibrant color with areas around 30% toward peak already. 🍂🍁

The transformation has begun, and it’s only going to get better from here. If you’re planning a fall trip to the Porcupine Mountains and Ontonagon area, the next few weeks should be beautiful!

The first hints of fall are beginning to show along the shores of Lake Superior, and before long, the Porcupine Mountains and surrounding forests will be painted in brilliant shades of red, orange and gold. ❤️🧡💛

There’s something truly special about fall in the western U.P.—cool crisp mornings, colorful drives, peaceful hikes, evenings around the fire, and Lake Superior framed by miles of autumn color.

🌅 There are sunrises… and then there are Porcupine Mountains sunrises.

Watching the first light of the day spill across Lake of the Clouds is one of those Upper Peninsula experiences that a photo can only begin to capture.

High above the lake, surrounded by miles of untouched wilderness, the Porcupine Mountains remind you just how wild and beautiful Michigan’s western U.P. really is. And with fall right around the corner, views like this are about to get even more spectacular. 🍂

If you’re visiting us, set the alarm early at least once. Grab a cup of coffee, make the drive into the Porkies, and watch the day begin from one of the most iconic overlooks in Michigan. It’s worth the early wake-up call.
