🌴 GOOD NEWS! ALABAMA’S BEACHES ARE OPEN AND WELCOMING VISITORS FOLLOWING HURRICANE ISAIAS!

Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism has announced that Alabama’s beaches experienced minimal damage from Hurricane Isaias, which impacted the northern Gulf Coast on Friday, October 9.

While communities to our east in Florida suffered significant impacts, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach were fortunate to avoid the worst of the storm.

HERE’S THE LATEST UPDATE:

🌊 BEACH CONDITIONS: As of Sunday morning, Alabama’s beaches have returned to YELLOW FLAG CONDITIONS, an improvement from the double red flags that closed Gulf waters following the hurricane. Moderate surf and currents still require caution.

🚗 BRIDGES & EVACUATIONS: All bridges have reopened, and evacuation orders have been lifted.

🏖️ BEACHES & TOURISM: Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are welcoming visitors back to our 32 miles of beautiful white sand beaches.

🍽️ LOCAL BUSINESSES: Many restaurants, shops, attractions, and other businesses have already reopened, with additional city facilities expected to reopen Monday.

🏡 STORM DAMAGE: Both cities report relatively minor damage, with cleanup efforts continuing.

LOCAL LEADERS RESPOND:

Gulf Shores Mayor Robert Craft expressed gratitude for the limited damage, noting that many businesses were able to reopen just one day after the storm.

Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon said the city was fortunate to avoid more serious impacts and is already returning to normal operations.

Beth Gendler, President & CEO of Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism, emphasized that the destination is ready to welcome visitors while keeping neighboring communities impacted by the hurricane in their thoughts.

While Alabama’s beaches were spared significant damage, our neighbors to the east are facing a much more difficult recovery.

Having experienced the devastation of Hurricane Sally in 2020, our Gulf Coast communities understand just how challenging hurricane recovery can be.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with everyone impacted, and we thank the first responders, utility workers, and emergency personnel who have worked tirelessly throughout the storm.

Orange Beach is famous for big charter boats, offshore fishing and packed marinas.

But tucked along Canal Road is a completely different way to experience the water.

The Orange Beach Wind & Water Learning Center sits at 26233 Canal Road on Wolf Bay and is operated by the City of Orange Beach. Its entire purpose is getting people onto the water and teaching them how to safely enjoy sailing and paddling.

And you don't have to own a boat.

The center offers seasonal sailing instruction, kayaking programs, youth sail camps and other on-the-water educational opportunities. The city says its instructors use boats including Optimists and Sunfish along with touring-style kayaks.

Here's something locals may not realize.

You can bring your own kayak, paddleboard or sailboat and launch from the facility during daylight hours. It's a municipal facility open for public access, not a private club.

The center is also affiliated with the American Canoe Association and is an active member of U.S. Sailing.

For kids growing up in Orange Beach, that's pretty special.

This is a community surrounded by bays, bayous, canals and the Gulf. Instead of simply looking at all that water, young people can actually learn how to navigate it.

And that's something that fits Orange Beach perfectly.

Long before tourism exploded, this community depended on boats.

Fishing boats.

Shrimp boats.

Work boats.

Small boats connecting families across local waterways.

The boats have changed, but learning how to handle yourself on the water is still very much part of life here.

Most people come to Gulf Shores and head straight toward the busiest stretches of beach.

But there's another way to reach the Gulf.

You have to walk for it.

The Pine Beach Trail runs through Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge on the Fort Morgan peninsula, one of the remaining protected pieces of Alabama's barrier-island environment.

And this isn't your typical walk to the beach.

The trail passes through several coastal habitats before eventually reaching the Gulf. Instead of walking out of a condo elevator and onto the sand, you're traveling through the kind of landscape that existed here before Gulf Shores became a major resort destination.

That's the real attraction.

No wall of high-rises waiting behind you.

No giant restaurant.

No souvenir shop.

Just dunes, wildlife, coastal vegetation and the Gulf of Mexico.

Bon Secour was established to protect important coastal habitat as development rapidly transformed Alabama's shoreline. Today the refuge remains a major stop for migratory birds and other wildlife.

For older Gulf Shores visitors, there's something especially interesting about seeing this.

People often say they miss when the Alabama beach was quieter and less developed.

Well, pieces of that coast still exist.

You just have to leave Highway 59 behind and go looking for them.
