Most people assume the white sand beaches in the Southeast got that way because of something tropical. The actual answer is far more interesting and a lot more Alabama. 🏖️ The sand at Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is pure quartz crystal, worn down and carried south from the Appalachian Mountains over millions of years by rivers and streams that eventually deposited it on the Gulf Coast. It's not imported. It's not treated. It's ancient mountain rock ground down to powder over geological time and delivered here by water.

That's why the color is so distinct, that bright almost-white that reflects light differently than the yellowish or darker sand you find at most beaches. Quartz doesn't absorb heat the same way either, which is why Gulf Shores sand stays cooler underfoot than you'd expect on a ninety degree August afternoon. The Gulf water turns that particular shade of green because of the sand depth and clarity, same geology doing two different jobs simultaneously. 🌊

Alabama's beaches are consistently ranked among the most beautiful on the Gulf Coast and sometimes nationally, and most of the credit goes to a geological process that started before humans existed anywhere on the continent. People drive past perfectly good beaches in other states to get here, and the sand is a big part of why. Once you know the backstory behind the color it hits different standing there looking at it.
