Did you know the Bushwacker didn’t begin on Alabama’s beaches?

🍹 Created in St. Thomas in 1975 and named for a dog called Bushwack, it reached Pensacola Beach before becoming a Gulf Coast tradition.
👍🏻A cold Bushwacker at the Flora-Bama now feels like part of an Alabama beach trip. Where do you get your favorite one? 🌊

Drive about three miles west of Highway 59 on West Beach Boulevard and you'll cross a little bridge.

Don't blink.

Because underneath you is one of the most interesting waterways in Gulf Shores.

Little Lagoon Pass.

This narrow opening connects Little Lagoon with the Gulf of Mexico.

On one side you've got the protected lagoon.

On the other you've got the open Gulf.

And surrounding the pass is Little Lagoon Pass Park, a public-access area with parking, restrooms, outdoor showers and beach access.

But fishermen know why this place can be especially interesting.

The mixing of environments around the pass attracts marine life, and Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism identifies West Beach at Little Lagoon Pass as one of the area's better shelling locations because the shallow waterway attracts mollusks and crustaceans.

It's also one of those places that makes West Beach feel different from central Gulf Shores.

You're away from the Highway 59 intersection.

The lagoon is right behind you.

The Gulf is right in front of you.

People fish.

Kids explore the shallows.

Others hunt for shells.

And everybody else drives across the bridge without realizing why the water underneath it matters.

Gulf Shores isn't simply where Alabama meets the Gulf.

It's where bays, lagoons, wetlands and the Gulf all collide.

Little Lagoon Pass lets you see that connection happening right in front of you.

Very interesting!

Very interesting!

The name is not decorative. There were actually orange trees. 🍊

Before Orange Beach was a beach town it was a working scrap of Baldwin County pine country living off turpentine, naval stores and shingle mills. Then came citrus. Lemuel Walker Sr. planted the first orange groves and opened the area's first post office right in his own house in 1901, and the fruit is where the name came from.

Citrus does not really belong this far north, and the weather eventually made that point. A run of hard freezes killed the groves off, the last damaging one in 1926, and the orange business was finished. What replaced it was already quietly starting. By the early 1920s local families were renting out their own boats to take visitors fishing, right alongside the first tourist hotel. That is the seed of the charter fleet that runs out of here today.

Bear Point is one of the three original settlement areas along with Orange Beach proper and Caswell in the middle, first settled in the mid 1860s and a Creek settlement before that. The town itself did not incorporate until 1984, five years after Hurricane Frederic. Population at the 2020 Census was 6,130. A place named for a crop that failed, which then made its living on the water instead. 🎣
