Down at the very bottom of our state, where Alabama meets the Gulf of Mexico, lie some of the most beautiful beaches in all the world, the sugar-white sands of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. The sand here is famously soft and white, made of fine quartz washed down over the ages from the Appalachian Mountains, and it squeaks beneath your feet as you walk. The water rolls in clear and green, gentle and warm, perfect for splashing, swimming, and searching for seashells along the shore. For generations, Alabama families have made the pilgrimage down to the coast each summer, packing up the car and heading to the beach for a week of sun, sand, and saltwater that becomes the highlight of the whole year. Children build sandcastles and chase the waves while grown folks doze under umbrellas and soak up the salt air, and everybody gathers in the evening to watch the sun sink glowing into the Gulf. There is nothing quite like a day at the beach to wash away the cares of the world, the rhythm of the waves and the cry of the gulls soothing the soul. The smell of the salt air and the feel of that warm white sand stay with a person all their life. Long after summer fades, the sound of those gentle waves and the warmth of the sun linger sweetly in the memory. These beaches have hosted countless family vacations, honeymoons, and lazy summer days, weaving themselves into the happiest memories of Alabama life. The coast is a place of simple joys and deep contentment, a gift at the bottom of our state. Sun, sand, and the people you love are all a body needs for a perfect Alabama summer day.

You've probably driven past Cotton Bayou more times than you can count.

But have you actually stopped?

Cotton Bayou Beach is one of Orange Beach's public Gulf-front beach access points, located along Perdido Beach Boulevard east of the Highway 161 intersection.

And despite sitting right in the middle of one of the busiest sections of Orange Beach, it gives people direct public access to the same white sand and Gulf water sitting in front of multimillion-dollar developments.

The City of Orange Beach identifies Cotton Bayou as one of its staffed beach-safety locations. During the current season, lifeguard coverage runs through October 31, although hours change after Labor Day.

There's also another Cotton Bayou access nearby that boaters know very well.

The state-operated Cotton Bayou boat launch sits at 25808 Perdido Beach Boulevard and provides paved parking and access to the inland waterway.

So within a relatively small area, you've got two completely different Orange Beach experiences.

On one side, you're headed toward the Gulf with a beach chair.

On the other, somebody is backing a fishing boat into Cotton Bayou.

That's Orange Beach in a nutshell.

The beach gets most of the photographs.

But the bays and bayous behind it are every bit as important to the city's identity.
