For the next two months in Florida, you can view the US Navy’s Blue Angels take to the skies over Pensacola during six remaining public practices at Naval Air Station Pensacola. Flights are scheduled for September 9, 15 and 22, followed by October 14, 20 and 28, with autograph sessions after the September 9, October 14 and October 28 practices. The flight line behind the National Naval Aviation Museum opens at 9:30 a.m., and the jets usually take off around 10:30 for close formations, fast passes and sharp turns overhead. Practice viewing, parking and museum admission are free, and the museum is home to more than 150 restored aircraft. You may also catch glimpses of the team practicing from nearby Fort Pickens, Johnson Beach on Perdido Key, boat cruises and other spots around Pensacola, sometimes with the white sand and blue-green Gulf below them. The Blue Angels have been based in Pensacola since 1946, making this one of the most fitting places in the country to watch them fly.

Just when you think Baldwin County has been developed from one end to the other, you find a place like Graham Creek Nature Preserve.

Located in Foley, the preserve protects nearly 500 acres of natural habitat.

And there is a LOT packed into those acres.

Wetlands.

Pine savannas.

Mixed forests.

Creeks.

Wildlife.

Hiking trails.

Kayaking.

Disc golf.

And even carnivorous pitcher plants.

The City of Foley describes Graham Creek as its largest park, with approximately 500 acres dedicated to preservation, recreation and environmental education.

One of the coolest features is the water access.

Visitors can paddle Graham Creek and explore a completely different side of Baldwin County from the one most vacationers see through their windshield.

There are also miles of trails and multiple disc-golf courses.

But for me, the real attraction is the habitat.

Coastal Baldwin County is developing incredibly fast.

Drive through Foley today and compare it with what was here 20 or 30 years ago.

It's almost unbelievable.

That's why preserving large pieces of natural land becomes increasingly important.

Graham Creek gives residents and visitors somewhere to walk into the woods, explore wetlands and remember that Baldwin County wasn't always subdivisions, shopping centers and beach traffic.

Sometimes the best thing a growing community can build is nothing at all.

Just protect what's already there.
