Summer camping is so overrated. Fall camping’s where it’s it! 🍁❤️🍂

The following is a collection of correspondence between Ga***rd Frye and Louis Neman. As you read through these letters, it becomes clear that Ga***rd was remarkably persistent in his efforts to see Bogus Bluff and “The Land” sold. Looking back, we are certainly grateful that he was!

Today, a conversation of this nature might be settled in a single afternoon with a few phone calls, texts, or emails. But in their time, communication moved at a much slower pace. Letters had to be written, typed, mailed, and then patiently awaited on the other end. What might take only hours today could stretch into weeks or even months.

There is something wonderful about imagining Ga***rd and Louis sitting at their typewriters, carefully composing these letters, perhaps wondering when the next response would arrive. The click-clack of the typewriter keys, the sound of the mail arriving, and the anticipation of opening a letter all seem so distant from our world today.

Yet these letters give us a fascinating glimpse into the past—and, more importantly, into the people whose persistence and decisions helped shape the story of our family. Pretty cool stuff!

Oh, and check out that "map" of the Land 😆

I know, I know… are we sick of these articles yet? What can I say? Bogus Bluff has inspired no shortage of stories and writings over the years!

They say this one is the definitive article on Bogus Bluff. Published in The Wisconsin Magazine in 1923, it captures the mystery, history, and wonder surrounding our beloved bluff and the land around it. Over a century later, it’s fascinating to read how people of the time understood and imagined the place we know today.

A map of the caves from 1961 ⛯ What are some of your greatest memories of the caves??? 🤔

Another article regarding the mysterious name of "Bogus Bluff." This one from the Wisconsin State Journal on January 28th, 1962.

The examines a local legend about Bogus Bluff, rumored to have been a hideout for counterfeiters who allegedly used a network of mysterious tunnels beneath it to conceal themselves, their equipment, and fake money. While the tunnels have been known to locals for years, their true purpose remains unclear.

What I found interesting is that Rev. Thomas Speckhard of Muscoda, the man in that iconic photo in the article, explored the passageways hoping to verify the stories and found evidence of old tunnels, but he couldn't find definitive proof that counterfeiters actually used them.

Eventually, he decided that his calling was better suited to teaching than full-time pastoral ministry. He became a German teacher at Wausau West High School, where generations of students knew him as “Herr Speckhard.” He died peacefully in 2020 at the age of 89.

So we now know that the curious pastor crawling around those mysterious tunnels eventually became a beloved high-school teacher and lived another 58 years after that adventure!

What a nice life to live! Does anyone from the family know of him?

Check this out: an article from the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, published way back in 1923—over 100 years ago!

The article speculates about how Bogus Bluff got its name. Surprisingly, it says the name was already being used as early as 1842. As with many local legends, one theory is that the name came from counterfeiters who supposedly hid out on the bluff and used it as a lookout.

But the article also considers another possibility: perhaps the name “Bogus Bluff” simply came from the cave itself. The cavern can be deceiving, appearing to extend much farther than it actually does.

Whatever the truth may be, it’s fascinating to think about how much history, legend, and imagination this place has inspired over the years. And can you just picture the “Indians” on “The Land”? 🧐

This 1965 Richland Observer article examines the misplaced marker for Bogus Bluff and attempts to clarify the bluff’s actual location.

The article describes Bogus Bluff as a prominent 200-foot-high landmark with a cave near its base. It also records local traditions about counterfeiters, bandits, and hidden treasure, as well as stories connecting the area to the Black Hawk War.

The article features longtime resident Paul Seifert and his grandsons, who owned about 700 acres along the river. His recollections provide insight into the area’s history and oral traditions. Overall, the article preserves both the documented landscape and the local legends that shaped the historical memory of Bogus Bluff and the surrounding Richland County area.

Interesting Fact: Paul Seifert was a German immigrant who emigrated to Wisconsin in the 1860’s. He was a farmer, artist, and collector who lived in the Richland County area of Wisconsin. He became known for his detailed paintings of local farms and landscapes and for collecting artifacts and sharing stories about the region. His connection to the mysterious Bogus Bluff Cave helped preserve local legends about hidden treasure and Wisconsin’s early history.

In fact, Paul Seifert's cave (also known as Death Song Cave or Big Eagle Cave) has an exact location that remains officially unknown, as Paul Seifert never publicly revealed where it was before he died.

According to local lore and historical legend, the hidden cavern is believed to be tucked away somewhere among the rugged bluffs and hills of Richland County, Wisconsin, near Richland City and Richland Center. Some say it is actually Bogus Bluff!

September 29, 1948, the deed was formally signed, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Neman family. Among the documents preserved from that transaction is the original “Offer to Purchase Real Estate,” a record that provides a tangible connection to the moment when the family acquired what would become one of the most beautiful and distinctive pieces of land in Wisconsin.

An old survey map, also preserved with these records, offers another glimpse into the property as it existed at the time of the sale. Together, these documents tell the story of a modest transaction that would, in time, take on a significance far greater than its original monetary value.

The total purchase price for the land was $3,500—a considerable sum in 1948, but one that seems almost inconsequential when measured against what the property has come to represent to the Neman and O’Malley families.

This letter offers a remarkable glimpse into the family’s history. In 1948, Great-Grandpa Louie and Great-Grandma Bev were in discussions with Mr. Ga***rd Fry about purchasing a piece of land known as Bogus Bluff in Gotham, Wisconsin. The asking price was between $3,000 and $4,000—a figure that, at the time, represented a significant investment.

It is fascinating to consider how differently the course of our family’s story might have unfolded had Louie and Bev never made this connection, or had they decided not to pursue the purchase. What may have seemed like an ordinary real-estate transaction at the time would ultimately become one of those seemingly small moments that can shape generations.

Looking back nearly eight decades later, it feels as though the circumstances simply aligned—the right people, the right place, and the right moment.

And, of course, there is one delightful detail that places the letter firmly in its time: that four-digit telephone number. A small reminder of just how much the world has changed since 1948.
