What can Mainers expect during tomorrow's partial solar eclipse? A UMaine expert explains:

☀️ When can Mainers see the eclipse?
In the greater Bangor area, viewers will see the partial eclipse between 12:54 and 2:49 p.m., according to Shawn Laatsch of the University of Maine’s Versant Power Astronomy Center.

🔭 Where can you watch it?
The Versant Power Astronomy Center will welcome members of the public to view the eclipse for free from the Historic Clark Telescope Observatory from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 12.

👓 How can you watch safely?
“You should never look directly at the sun for more than a second or two without protection,” Laatsch said. “Solar eclipse glasses and solar filters block out 99% of the sun rays.”

📅 What if you miss it?
The next partial solar eclipse in Maine will occur in 2045, Laatsch said. The next total solar eclipse visible in Maine will occur on May 1, 2079.

“People with any interest in astronomy will enjoy seeing this partial solar eclipse, especially if they can’t travel across the world to see the total solar eclipse,” Laatsch said.

Last week, Bear, the newest Comfort K9 with the University of Maine Police Department, stopped by Hotel Ursa to introduce himself to a few of our resident bears.

As New Student Orientation gets underway, Bear is already helping welcome the next generation of Black Bears to campus. Wishing every new Black Bear a wonderful start to the journey ahead. Welcome to UMaine!

✨ New Student Orientation is almost here, and we can't wait to welcome the next generation of Black Bears to campus!

As you prepare to begin this exciting new chapter at the University of Maine, you're becoming part of something much bigger—a proud, supportive community that will be with you every step of the way. At Hotel Ursa, we believe in carrying that spirit beyond our campus and into our local community.

This September, in honor of National Teddy Bear Day, we're hosting our Annual Teddy Bear Donation Drive to benefit children receiving care at Bangor's Children's Miracle Network Hospital.

Inspired by Ursa Major—the Great Bear constellation, a symbol of strength, protection, and guidance—we hope to bring a little comfort to children facing some of life's biggest challenges.

🐻 How you can help during your Orientation stay:

• Pack a Bear: Leave a little extra room in your suitcase for a new teddy bear and present it to our front desk team when you arrive.

• Donate at the Desk: Saving your luggage space for Maine souvenirs? Make a donation at check-in, and our team will happily purchase a teddy bear on your behalf.

Together, we can help provide a small reminder that someone is thinking of them—a simple act of kindness that can make a world of difference.

Thank you for helping us shine a light for local children who need it most. Safe travels, enjoy Orientation, and welcome to the Black Bear family. 💙⭐
