For nearly 60 years University of Maine alumni and friends stayed at the University Inn and Academic Suites as part of their visits to campus. That has changed, as the Orono landmark has been purchased by Texas-based Tyler Technologies.

The software company is expanding its operations in Maine and intends to convert the inn to office space for an estimated 75 employees. Its close proximity to UMaine and its faculty and students will allow for greater collaboration with the university, the company said.

The Texas-based software company, which serves public-sector clients, plans to move its Bangor staff to the former University Inn Academic Suites. The company also plans to add new hires there.

It’s been 2 years (due to Covid) since we’ve been able to have our staff Christmas party for The University Inn and Black Bear Inn. Tonight we were able to spend time with each other and celebrate our work FAMILY! Thank you Tracey Whitten and Guy Whitten for keeping us employed, and giving us hope each and every day. We all know it hasn’t been easy! But you never wavered in your commitment to the hotels and us. Our gift to you is just a tiny gesture in our appreciation and love for you both. We hope you enjoy the painting and every time you look at it, a feeling of love and peace washes over you. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you and love you❤️

apologize for not staying in touch with all of you. Since June, we have been so busy that our staff has barely been able to breathe. We saw an unprecedented amount of tourism in the past six months. We are still extremely busy here at
