Birch Forest Lodge is a northern Minnesota resort located in Orr, MN on Pelican Lake. Our cabin rentals and boat rentals make our MN resort a perfect place for family vacations, fishing trips, romantic getaways and group retreats. Our resort offers 11 exceptionally clean Minnesota lake cabin rentals nestled on over 1000 feet of amazing Pelican Lake lakeshore. Many of our cabins are newly remodeled, including a new 3 bedroom handicap-accessible cabin rental, complete with all the comforts of home. Over the last 25 years, I’ve spent thousands of hours fishing and have been fortunate enough to land some pretty amazing catches.

22 years ago today, I landed the greatest catch of my life. Best part is, she still hasn’t thrown me back! 😂❤️

Happy anniversary to my beautiful wife! 22 years ago, I was a little thinner, had a lot more hair, had only half as many crazy ideas, and somehow was even less mature than I am today. But I knew that marrying Kasey was the best thing I could do that day.

She’s been by my side ever since, and together we’ve taken on the world.

In that time, we’ve both graduated from a university, moved over a dozen times across four different states (and once internationally), have three great kids, survived a scary car wreck, held hands while surgeons operated on our son’s heart, knelt together in prayer countless times, started a couple of businesses, caught hundreds of amazing fish, watched our oldest move out on her own, made the kids sit down for family scripture study, driven thousands of miles to sporting events hoping a kid might play longer than 60 seconds, hiked to dozens of waterfalls, and had so many other adventures together.

I don’t know what the next 22 years will bring, but I know we’ll face them together. Life isn’t meant to be enjoyed alone.

To all of you who have supported us along the way, I hope you have someone in your life to share both the good times and the challenges with. My prayer today is that we’ll all take a moment to thank God for guiding us to that special person.

Today as I take out the last few sections of the dock I feel somewhat reflective of the season. Dock work is always unique and a job that feels rewarding. In the spring I video recorded one day of dock work so you can see the process. I hope you enjoy this short video of an 8 hour day of work in 47 seconds!

The northern lights are putting on a show! This is my favorite time of the year to see them. Naked eye is only picking up mostly silvery white with a little green. There is some movement. But when I run a 10 second exposure, boom-colors are bright!!!

Spent several hours yesterday removing hazard buoys from the lake. If you are headed out on Pelican Lake in the near future, please be extra careful! The installation and removal of the buoys in spring and fall along with the maintenance of the anchors, chains and buoys takes considerable amount of time and is not an easy task physically. The anchors are at least 60 pounds and the buoys aren’t light either. Lifting them out of the lake when they are covered in slime is not fun. At the end of the day I was wet, coated in muck and smelled like the slime that was all over my pants.

However, I am a big believer that the hazard buoys on the lake are a significant help to those of us who boat on the lake and help to keep the lake safe. So, not only do I find it an honorable way to serve my fellow fishermen, it is a task I will continue to do. As we removed the buoys we got an up close and personal look at some of the rocks that are marked. Huge, massive boat killing rocks in the middle of the lake. Several of them mere inches below the surface!

Next time you are on the lake and see a hazard buoy, please know they are there for your benefit marking a hazardous rock pile and not just a marker for a possible fishing spot. I strongly recommend staying 100 yards from them with your boat. If you want to fish the rock piles, please use your trolling motor.

Once again, until mid-May when the buoys are officially returned, please use extra care when boating on Pelican!

Fall colors are peak right now! September has always been my favorite month in the Northwoods and this year is not disappointing. Everywhere you look is a mixture of orange, red and yellow leaves amongst the green of the pines. Yesterday the water was perfectly glass and the reflection of color was incredible. What time of year is your favorite?

We really enjoyed the harvest moon this weekend. Moon was huge and glowing as it rose over the east end of the lake. I took these picture on my phone, can’t believe I was able to pick up some of the moons definition! Love my life on the lake!!!

We had a busy week here with some much needed projects. What projects? Well, funny you ask. Cabins 7, 8 and Voyageur had their tables refinished. Voyageurs deck had the rotten boards removed and replaced. Cabin 9’s door was removed, cleaned up and painted. Cabin 10 had prep work done for the NEW DECK!!! Oops, that was supposed to be a secret…
So grateful to Laura, Ann, Ken and Pat for helping us out last week. Fishing is great, leaves are peak colors and life is good. One week left and then we winterize everything and close for the season.

Absolutely gorgeous moment this morning. This morning, just as the sun was rising, a massive, bright rainbow graced the western sky. You never know what you will wake up to on Pelican Lake, but you always know it will be amazing!!!

Absolutely beautiful fall day today! The crappie were biting, the sun was shining and everyone in the boat was smiling. Kasey’s parents are visiting so took them crappie fishing. If you look at my graph you can see I was trolling a small, 12 foot deep spot along w**d lines. Life is good on Pelican Lake!!!

Today was one of those difficult, yet rewarding days as a parent. Our oldest kid has officially moved out. A while ago our oldest, Ady, told us she wanted to go on an extended missionary/service trip. As she told us why she wanted to go out and help people we were so pleased to hear her story and wanted to support her and her decision. Of course, we have worries and today our emotions are heavy as we said our goodbyes.

For the last 5 months Ady has been preparing for this. First she had to fill out paperwork and apply. For months she kept telling people her plans and everyone would ask her where she will serve. She would just shrug and say I will go wherever they need me! Eventually she received her call and she was told she would be assigned to work and serve in Northern California. Ady was so excited!

All summer Ady has worked to save money as she will be serving for the next 18 months. Ady’s excitement for this opportunity has been contagious in our home. But then today came.

Last night I laid in bed for hours thinking about the day we brought her home from the hospital. I knew the moment I first held her that I loved her and she was a precious gift from God. Ady has always been a beacon of light, always smiling, laughing and singing. Seriously, she sings all day every where she goes. Laying there I was thinking of how quiet the house will be without her. Last year when Ady was off to college we looked forward to each weekend when she would come home. Now we won’t see her for the next 18 months.

For the next 18 months Ady has been asked to fully commit to serving other people, sharing gospel messages and looking for opportunities to share the light of Christ with others. While she won’t be allowed to travel home for the next year and a half, Ady says she will call us every week. And I’m sure I will email her a couple times a week to make sure I tell her everything that goes on. But, it won’t be the same. Today my heart is heavy. My little girl, that sweet little girl that used to hold my finger while she slept in my arms has officially moved on. My heart is swollen with joy as I know she is making a good and righteous decision. I hope she is able to find people who need a a little light in their lives. Her smile is sure to brighten anyone’s day.
