Birch Forest Lodge is a northern Minnesota resort located in Orr, MN on Pelican Lake. Our cabin rentals and boat rentals make our MN resort a perfect place for family vacations, fishing trips, romantic getaways and group retreats. Our resort offers 11 exceptionally clean Minnesota lake cabin rentals nestled on over 1000 feet of amazing Pelican Lake lakeshore. Many of our cabins are newly remodeled

Yesterday Brock and I ran up to Canada to try some fishing. Fishing was really difficult and subpar. But, seeing two moose was epic!!! They swam across the lake by us and we had the opportunity to watch them climb out and head into the woods. It was amazing how quickly such a large animal completely disappeared. First time I’ve seen a moose in probably 12 years.

We are excited to announce a fun new activity at Birch Forest Lodge. Starting today we will hide a specially made block somewhere on the property. Whoever finds the special block can bring it into the lodge for a free prize! When the block has been found and redeemed we will re-hide it. Need a clue where it is? We love getting guest fishing photos… but every once in a while somebody gets a little creative. 😂

Our latest “catch” comes from a guest who apparently wandered a little too far from the dock and ended up offshore with a giant shark. 🦈

As many of you probably heard, the Minnesota DNR is making some changes to how fishing licenses are issued. We are getting more and more questions each week about this so I'd like to try and answer some questions.

First, yes, Minnesota is moving to a digital fishing license system. You are no longer required to carry a paper copy of a fishing license on you, you can have a digital version on your phone.

Can you still get a printed license? Yes, but not at Birch Forest Lodge. Sorry. In 2017 we applied for what is called an Agent's License to issue hunting and fishing licenses here at Birch Forest Lodge. Since then we have printed hundreds of licenses. And it has been our pleasure to help you get a license. This spring the DNR decided to rescind all agents licenses and we had to reapply. We did so. And we were informed that the state is now requiring businesses who print and issue licenses to purchase certain pieces of equipment, including a special computer and printer. This will cost us a couple thousand dollars. We apologize to those who previously picked up fishing licenses here. With operating costs skyrocketing we are trying to keep costs down so we can continue to offer a quality vacation at an affordable rate. Since we don't make any money on fishing licenses, we decided to not purchase the equipment. With this decision, the DNR will not allow us to print licenses.

Where can you get a license printed? For many people, purchasing a digital fishing license might not seem like a big deal. Most states in the US and all of Canada use a digital fishing license. But for those of our customers who either aren't comfortable getting a license online or prefer to have a printed copy, we get it. You can still get a fishing license at Walmart, most fleet farm supply companies statewide, and locally at Norman's One Stop, and at Pelican Bay Foods.

Once the page loads, scroll down and click on get started. You will need your drivers license and need to know your social security number. If you have an old license with the Minnesota DNR number that will make the process faster.

Again, we are sorry to no longer be able to serve you in this manner. If you still want to come up to the lodge and do the process, we are happy to help you do it on your phone.

Minnesota DNR's new electronic licensing system launches June 9! 📆

The DNR is rolling out a modern licensing system replacement that is built for today's customers and technology. Phase one of the launch in June will include the hunting and fishing modules. 🤳

The new system offers more flexibility than ever — three ways to buy a license (mobile app, online, or in-person from a license agent) and three ways to carry it (paper, PDF, or stored in the app). 📱

As part of this transition, hunting and fishing licenses will be temporarily unavailable for purchase between June 2 - 8 as we switch over to the new system. During that time, people may fish without a license in Minnesota. All regulations for the season and bag limits will remain in effect. On June 9, fishing licenses will again be required and you will be able to purchase them through the new system. 🎣

Turkey hunters need to register their harvest before end of day (11:59 pm) June 1. They will be unable to register their harvest during the transition/cutover period. 🦃

For now, nothing changes for those needing to register or title recreational vehicles and watercraft. That module of the new system will launch at a later date. 🚤

Happy Memorial Day everyone! The lake today is gorgeous, the sun is shining and people are catching fish. Our family knows we owe days like today to those who serve and have served our country, especially those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Freedom isn’t free. And today we are enjoying a beautiful day on the lake because others have given their life protecting ours. In our families we have two siblings and two brothers in law who are military. We often think of them and are grateful they returned from their deployments. So today we hope you join with us in honoring those who gave everything for us!

Today we would like to take a moment to thank 4 very kind, helpful and overall wonderful people. May is by far our most difficult month at the resort. SO MUCH WORK. Deep cleaning the cabins, laundering the curtains and blankets, cleaning carpets, putting in the docks, getting water to all the cabins, raking billions and billions of pine needles and leaves, fixing benches, getting the lodge set up, taking boats out of storage and so, so much more. Each year in May, Kasey and I go to bed so tired and we ask each other, how did we do this last year? This year, we were so blessed to have 4 very special people come and help us.

For the last several years we have offered a May special of a free cabin to anyone who wants to help us get the resort ready for the season. Every summer numerous people tell us they would love being a resorter. We always say, well you can try it out in May if you want! 4 hours of work in exchange for each night in the cabin. Everyone says, “oh that sounds amazing”. And usually, no one shows up. This year, Laura, Chuck, Pat and Ken all showed up. They didn’t know each other, and each of them have friends and family and lives back home. They all had hundreds of reasons to stay home. But we are so grateful to them and for their service to our family. Chuck showed up on April 29th and was here for more than 3 weeks. Chuck helped me with the docks and water lines and numerous hours raking. Laura was with us for 2 weeks and helped Kasey with laundry and cleaning cabins. Pat and Ken came last year and had so much fun they came back this year. This year they replaced a couple doors, redid several benches, refinished a couple table tops, helped me with some plumbing and trim work along with the several other small things.

Sadly we had to say goodbye to Laura, Chuck, Pat and Ken this week until next spring. We hope they each have a great summer. Each time we look around Birch Forest Lodge we can see evidence of their work here helping our family. We hope each of you feel their love for the resort and Pelican Lake during your upcoming vacation! And we hope that they come back next year(and maybe a few others might join us)!

We are leafing!!! I know it might not seem like a big deal to some, but after months and months of looking at brown, things are greening up in northern Minnesota. All around us trees are turning green, so pretty! And, the leaves in the trees also mean forest fire danger is drastically reduced. Very grateful for the beauty and safety the leaves provide!
