Winter Trails Update 3/24/2018: While all snowmobile trails in Voyageurs National Park remain open, law enforcement rangers have begun the process of removing "Thin Ice" signs. Please take extra care when traveling frozen lake surfaces, especially if you are traveling off-trail. The Kabetogama Lake Ice Road is now CLOSED for the season. That means that the Kabetogama Lake Sledding Hill and Skating Rink are also CLOSED for the season. The Rainy Lake Ice Road is currently open, but its condition is being monitored daily and it may be closed before next weekend. All ski and snowshoe trails remain open, though there is thin snow coverage and even bare ground in sunny areas. On the right side of the image is a park ranger wearing cold weather clothing and a snowmobile helmet. He is holding a "Thin Ice" sign.)

McCarthy Beach State Park
Trail conditions:
The warm temperatures have created icy conditions on the trails. Heavy snowmobile use has exposed the base ice and ground especially on hills. The Taconite and Tim Corey snowmobile trails are groomed through the park and beyond but trail conditions are fair. The park's trails are icy and slippery in heavily used areas. Deeper in the forest snowshoeing is still okay but the open sunny areas are clear of snow. Cross Country ski trails are not groomed. Skiers have broke trails on the Red Top and Big Hole trails and a trail that winds through the campground and loops back along Side Lake. Parking and trail heads are located at Ski Trail or Pickerel Lake parking lots and next to the park office to access the Campground/Side Lake trail. Visitors are welcome to use the picnic shelter and fireplace for warming; purchase firewood at the park's office or use DNR approved wood. Other fun activities are bird watching, star gazing, northern lights viewing, and the sunrises have been amazing lately.
