Locals and visitors to Ouray are welcome! This is an official post from Ouray County Sheriff’s Office that visitors are allowed on the small detour.

⚠ US 550 north of Ouray remains closed for fire personnel activity along a two-mile stretch of highway below the ridge where portions of the fire is burning. Emergency services are in this area and traffic is not permitted for safety reasons.

📍 Southbound from Ridgway to Ouray - Local commuters, visitors and local deliveries to Ouray only on CR 17 detour. All other southbound motorists and through-traffic must take the CO Hwy 145 detour through Telluride.

📍 Northbound traffic from Silverton with a final destination of Ouray can access the town of Ouray. Travelers with final destinations north of Ouray need to seek the alternate route of CO 145 through Telluride.

A quick update for anyone with upcoming plans to visit Ouray:

We know many of you have questions about the active fire north of town, and we completely understand if you’re feeling uncertain about upcoming reservations.

At this time, town remains clear of smoke, and our riding areas and trails are currently unaffected. The fire is located north of Ouray on the east side, and current conditions have kept smoke moving away from town.

That said, guest safety and comfort come first. We are happy to reschedule or refund reservations over the next couple of days and will continue providing updates as conditions change.

If you are in the area, please stay alert, follow official updates, and avoid the closed section of Hwy 550 being used for staging equipment and emergency operations so crews can continue their work safely.
