What if you could bring back a little piece of the past? 🕰️❤️

Sometimes, all it takes is an old photograph, a little imagination, and the willingness to chase something beautiful.

Once upon a time, a magnificent Tiffany grandfather clock stood proudly in the halls of The Pumpelly Estate. In the late 1970s, the estate’s beautiful collection of antiques and furnishings was sold at auction, beginning new chapters in homes near and far.

Ever since, we’ve dreamed of bringing a little of that old magic back.

Armed with a photograph of the original clock, I was determined to find something just like it. And two years ago, there it was. Another Tiffany grandfather clock. In New Jersey!

Naturally, my husband and I did what any perfectly reasonable couple would do. We packed an overnight bag and turned a clock-buying expedition into a spontaneous little getaway.

A bit of wandering, an ocean sunset, and one very large antique later, we were headed home with a piece of history.

Today, that beautiful clock stands almost exactly where its predecessor once did. It’s not the original, but somehow, it feels like it was always meant to be there.

I often wonder where that first clock ended up. Whether it’s still ticking away in another lovely home, treasured by someone who may never know its history here.

I certainly hope so.

Because restoring a historic home isn’t just about bringing back its beauty. It’s about bringing back the feeling of what once was.

And sometimes, that takes a little determination and a husband willing to drive to New Jersey on a whim. ❤️

Behind the blue doors…
A little history. A little reinvention. And something rather extraordinary in the making.
We’ve spent the last several weeks bringing new life to our beloved Carriage House, thoughtfully restoring, reimagining, and honoring every bit of character that makes this place so special.
The floors have been transformed. The finishing touches are finding their places. And the magic? Well, that’s been here all along.
We’re almost ready to let you in.
The grand reveal is coming. 🥂

Today, the buggy wash went black.

After generations of horses, carriages, water, work, and wear, this little room in the Carriage House is beginning another chapter.

Today was the first step in the epoxy process—a deep, glossy black foundation that feels almost impossibly dramatic against those old wood walls.

But this is only the beginning.

Tomorrow, that black will take on a constellation of color: copper, chocolate, pearl and warm metallic tones, layered and swirling across the floor. Rich like worn leather. A little moody. A little unexpected. And somehow familiar—as though it has always belonged here.

That has become our favorite part of restoring Pumpelly: not making the old new, but finding a way for the new to feel old.

Tomorrow, she gets her stars. ✨

Some people walk through the doors of 44 Front Street and somehow leave a piece of themselves behind. Nancy’s was already here.

This is Nancy Dyer.

Nancy grew up in this house. She knew these rooms long before they became The Pumpelly Estate — when 44 Front Street was simply home. She was also the last of the Pumpelly family to occupy the house, closing a chapter of its history that I now have the extraordinary privilege of caring for.

And this week, she came home.

She brought photographs. She brought stories. She filled in little pieces of this house that no deed, newspaper clipping or history book ever could. We sat together and talked about the people who lived here, the rooms as she remembered them, the moments that happened within these walls.

We laughed.

We cried.

And somewhere along the way, history stopped feeling like history.

It became alive.

There is something almost indescribable about sitting with someone who remembers your home before it was yours — hearing her memories while standing in the very rooms where they happened. For someone who loves this old house as fiercely as I do, it was nothing short of magic.

But the greatest gift Nancy gave me wasn’t a photograph or a story about Pumpelly.

It was Nancy.

Somehow, the last Pumpelly to call 44 Front Street home has become my “Mamma Number 4” and one of the most treasured humans I’ve had the privilege of getting to know.

Funny how an old house can do that.

It doesn’t just hold people.

Sometimes, more than a century later, it brings them back together.

They simply don’t build entrances like this anymore.

The millwork. The leaded glass. The sweeping staircase just beyond the door. More than a century later, and she still knows how to make an entrance.

Some things are worth preserving.

Tucked beneath the trees, with the Susquehanna just beyond.

From the ground, you see the Carriage House.
From up here, you see the whole story.

A century-old estate hidden beneath a canopy of green. Lawns that lead toward the river. An old Carriage House that once served a very different purpose, now opening its doors for dinners, celebrations, weddings and whatever comes next.

We’ve spent a lot of time looking down lately—at old floors, old boards, old photographs and all the little pieces of this place we’re trying to preserve.

Every once in a while, it’s nice to look up.

Or, in this case… way up.

Some houses are decorated. Others are collected.

A piece found here. A treasure uncovered there. Silver that catches the afternoon light, old china that was simply too beautiful to leave behind, and chandeliers that have been glowing over this house far longer than we have.

At Pumpelly, it’s the layers we love most — the slightly mismatched, wonderfully impractical, quietly beautiful things that make an old house feel like home.

Nothing too perfect.
Nothing too precious.
Just a house with 124 years of stories… and plenty of room for a few more.
