They simply don’t build entrances like this anymore.

The millwork. The leaded glass. The sweeping staircase just beyond the door. More than a century later, and she still knows how to make an entrance.

Some things are worth preserving.

Tucked beneath the trees, with the Susquehanna just beyond.

From the ground, you see the Carriage House.
From up here, you see the whole story.

A century-old estate hidden beneath a canopy of green. Lawns that lead toward the river. An old Carriage House that once served a very different purpose, now opening its doors for dinners, celebrations, weddings and whatever comes next.

We’ve spent a lot of time looking down lately—at old floors, old boards, old photographs and all the little pieces of this place we’re trying to preserve.

Every once in a while, it’s nice to look up.

Or, in this case… way up.

Welcome to The Pumpelly Estate.
History below. The Susquehanna beyond. And a whole lot more story still to come.

Some houses are decorated. Others are collected.

A piece found here. A treasure uncovered there. Silver that catches the afternoon light, old china that was simply too beautiful to leave behind, and chandeliers that have been glowing over this house far longer than we have.

At Pumpelly, it’s the layers we love most — the slightly mismatched, wonderfully impractical, quietly beautiful things that make an old house feel like home.

Nothing too perfect.
Nothing too precious.
Just a house with 124 years of stories… and plenty of room for a few more.

Welcome home. 🤍

Same house. Different century.

The earliest photograph we have of The Pumpelly Estate — and proof that she’s always known how to pose for a picture.

The landscaping may have changed. The trees certainly grew up. Generations came and went.

But that roofline. Those windows. That porch.

Still unmistakably her.

There’s something extraordinary about standing on the same steps where people stood more than a century ago and realizing we’re just one little chapter in a very long story.

We’re taking good care of her.

And occasionally wondering what she knows that we don’t. 😉

Allow us to introduce the unofficial management team at Pumpelly.

Jinx & Kiamesia — Kai for short 😉, named after the lady of the house.

Their qualifications include enthusiastically greeting every arrival with a bark and a wagging tail, supervising all porch activity, occupying whichever piece of furniture they please, and possessing an alarming talent for escaping the grounds.

There have been dogs at Pumpelly for generations. These two are simply the latest to believe the entire estate belongs to them.

And frankly?

They may be right.

Spoiled rotten. Loved ridiculously.
My forever escape artists. 🖤🐾

Happy National Dog Day from The Pumpelly Dogs.

There’s owning an old house.

And then there’s realizing the old house has plans for you.

Somewhere along the way, Pumpelly stopped feeling like a property we purchased and started feeling like something we were responsible for carrying forward.

Lately, that has meant opening doors, pulling up carpet, asking a lot of questions, finding a few surprises underneath things we probably shouldn’t have touched 😏 — and slowly figuring out what the next chapter of this place should look like.

Not newer.

Not perfect.

Just loved, useful, full of people again…and still unmistakably Pumpelly.

So if you’ve noticed things looking a little less polished around here lately, that’s because we’ve rolled up our sleeves.

There’s work happening behind these blue doors.

And I have a feeling you’re going to want to see what we find.

Welcome home. 🤍

This may not be our usual Pumpelly glamour shot… but around here, history isn’t always pretty while you’re uncovering it.

We rolled up our sleeves this week and made a decision we’ve been talking about for quite some time: the old, drab carpet in the Carriage House had to go.

And as we started pulling it back, we did what every old-house owner does…

We crossed our fingers and whispered, please let there be something good under here. 🤞

And oh, did this old girl have a few surprises waiting for us.

We uncovered some absolute gems. We also uncovered a few sections that have clearly lived a very long, very interesting life (floods wreaking the most havoc). Is it perfect? Not even close.

But then again, we’re not interested in erasing 120+ years of history. We’re interested in bringing it back to life.

Over the next several weeks, we’re taking you along as we figure out what can be saved, what needs a little love, and what stories might be hiding beneath our feet.

Dust, imperfections, surprises and all.

Because sometimes restoring an old property means making it a little less glamorous before it can become something truly beautiful again.

Come along. We’re unearthing Pumpelly history, one floorboard at a time. 🤎

If these walls could talk…

They’d whisper about afternoon tea, rustling skirts, handwritten letters, unexpected visitors, and conversations that lasted long after the sun went down.

More than a century later, the light still pours through the windows.

And the house is still making memories.
