Interesting historical tidbit for those of you who visit us on snowmobile and head to the trains!
Back in the early days of the Maine's Woods Telephone system, the Maine Forest Service laid an underwater telephone cable across Eagle Lake about 1/2 mile north of Pillsbury Island. The cable, dubbed a "submarine cable", was 4,750 feet long and connected the Tramway headquarters to Soper Mountain and beyond and was run in 1935. The previous line took a roundabout route and was difficult to keep brushed out. This was one of the first underwater cables used by the Maine Forest Service.
