We had to make the difficult decision to remove our large Tulip Poplar tree!
The decision was based on multiple factors, not the least of which was because of roof damage caused from downed limbs during a recent wind storm.
Everything has a lifespan, but we are sad to see it go! A new tree will be planted soon!

Portrait of the First Family of the Farmhouse

Wm Seymour Chapman (1863-1952)
Harriet Cloud Chapman (1866-1919)
Anna Chapman Clayman (1895-1965)

When this portrait was taken in 1903, Mr. Chapman was half owner of the Ozark Mill and also involved in several other local businesses. Befitting the status of this prominent family, he built a fine home and barn in 1910.
After the death of his wife in 1919 from the Spanish flu pandemic, Mr. Chapman lived here until 1938.
A copy of this portrait was secured from their descendants. We are proud to exhibit it once again on the walls it had graced over 100 years ago.

Meet your hosts, Mark and Susan Bryant!
Over 25 years ago, Mark and Susan began hosting visitors to the Ozarks from all over the world when they opened their original facility, named Barn Again, in a repurposed 1940's dairy barn on their property in the Finley River valley near downtown Ozark, MO. The Bryant's live in another converted barn on the property and had leased out the Farmhouse prior to totally restoring it recently for traveler and tourist use.
With the addition of The 1910 Farmhouse as a second lodging option on the property, they rebranded as Finley Valley Farm. The original facility, known now as Finley Valley Farm Extended Stay Lodging, Ozark Missouri , is used for longer term stays.
The Bryant's have never had an interest in the quantity of guests that they host, but rather in the quality of the experience that they can provide to those who stay with them.
They have traveled the world and have incorporated into the facilities the things that they found were important for comfort, safety and enjoyment. They believe you will enjoy it as well!

Why is the porch ceiling painted blue at The 1910 Farmhouse?
There may be more than one historical reason, although the reason it is blue today is that in the restoration process, we discovered that it had been painted blue when built in 1910! That was a good enough reason for us to paint it blue again!
But why was it painted blue in the first place?
There are four possible historic reasons that it was painted blue. We don't know which of these is the real reason, but it is fun to speculate!
First possiblity: According to certain beliefs, the blue color was supposed to ward off “haints” or evil spirits who might want to harm the house or the family inside. Not sure if that works, but we can state without question that we have not seen any ghosts! However, some guests report that they have seen visions of former inhabitants.
Second possiblity: Blue paint keeps insects away! While not necessarily rooted in science, there are explanations for that theory. Older blue paints were often made with lye, which is a known insect repellent, and to keep the paint looking new, a new coat had to be applied every few years, thus refreshing the insect repellent. You may be aware that the pioneers suffered less from insect bites than we do because of their use of lye soap. Another theory is that the blue paint mimics the color of the sky and therefore tricks insects into not making nests there.
Third possiblity: Blue ceilings extend the daylight hours! The light blue color reflects light, so the porch will seem brighter during the twilight hours. You can also use less artificial light to brighten up the space at night. This practice was very popular in the Victorian era.
Fourth possiblity: They may have painted it blue because everyone else painted their ceiling blue! It's kind of like red barns. Why are most barns red?
We will leave you to ponder that, but the reality is we will never know the exact reason why the porch ceiling was painted blue 113 years ago.
We can, however, say with absolute certainty that it is painted blue today only because it was painted blue when it was built in 1910.
