Why is the porch ceiling painted blue at The 1910 Farmhouse?
There may be more than one historical reason, although the reason it is blue today is that in the restoration process, we discovered that it had been painted blue when built in 1910! That was a good enough reason for us to paint it blue again!
But why was it painted blue in the first place?
There are four possible historic reasons that it was painted blue. We don't know which of these is the real reason, but it is fun to speculate!
First possiblity: According to certain beliefs, the blue color was supposed to ward off “haints” or evil spirits who might want to harm the house or the family inside. Not sure if that works, but we can state without question that we have not seen any ghosts! However, some guests report that they have seen visions of former inhabitants.
Second possiblity: Blue paint keeps insects away! While not necessarily rooted in science, there are explanations for that theory. Older blue paints were often made with lye, which is a known insect repellent, and to keep the paint looking new, a new coat had to be applied every few years, thus refreshing the insect repellent. You may be aware that the pioneers suffered less from insect bites than we do because of their use of lye soap. Another theory is that the blue paint mimics the color of the sky and therefore tricks insects into not making nests there.
Third possiblity: Blue ceilings extend the daylight hours! The light blue color reflects light, so the porch will seem brighter during the twilight hours. You can also use less artificial light to brighten up the space at night. This practice was very popular in the Victorian era.
Fourth possiblity: They may have painted it blue because everyone else painted their ceiling blue! It's kind of like red barns. Why are most barns red?
We will leave you to ponder that, but the reality is we will never know the exact reason why the porch ceiling was painted blue 113 years ago.
We can, however, say with absolute certainty that it is painted blue today only because it was painted blue when it was built in 1910.
