It has been a difficult five weeks. My family evacuated last week after highway 132, which we resided on was closed down. At the road check we were told we could not return to our house if we left so we turned around and returned to our house to collect our dogs and any other items we could fit in the car. I was able to pack up the family photos and a few momentos. Sofia, our nine year old daughter, filled a plastic container with items she wanted to save, We each packed a bag of clothes. We were hopeful that Hawaii Civil Defense would let us return and retrieve more items but the danger from lava flow made it impossible, and very quickly it took a turn for the worst. Our family business, Kapoho Village Inn, has be damaged extensively by fire. We are unable to assess the damage since it is surrounded by lava. In addition, our home, which is next door to the inn appears to be standing but it, too, is surrounded by lava. There is a strong possibility it has already been taken by fire since lava is creeping on our property. Unfortunately, I have not seen any current flyover video to verify. I did learn about the inn while I was reading a DailyMail article online. I was shocked to see our lush tropical foliage burnt and the inn appeared destroyed. It has been a humbling, life changing experience. I am fortunate to have the support of family and friends. We are ready for our new beginnings. Please keep us and the Pahoa community in your prayers. Much Aloha, the Crespo-Venti Family
